Swallowing

I just wondered if/how many of us here experience swallowing difficulties?

As one of the many wonderful symptoms I experience of TMJD, swallowing difficulty is one of them!

It's as though my throat muscles give up half way through pushing food down and I have to double swallow (if that makes sense) to get the food down instead of feeling it's stuck in my throat. i always have the sensation that like a lump of bread is stuck in my throat and no matter how much swallowing I do, even drinking water to try to shift the feeling, it doesn't wor, I simply have to wait for the sensation to pass, it could be there for a few hours to a week, making enjoying food even more difficult than it already is, on top of a limited ability to chew!

Does anyone else feel the same at all?

HI--you've explained the situation very well. I have the identical situation daily myself. I also feel sometimes that I have a really tight turtleneck on, and that it gets worse for sure from stress. This is due to the forward head posture we all can get from tmj. This should hopefully subside through your splint therapy once your jaw is repositioned. Before I knew these were symptoms of tmj, last summer I had this so bad I could hardly eat, I felt like someone was constantly choking me, and I had panick attacks right and left from it. I even went as far as seeing an ENT to have him look down my throat a bit, and he said I was fine, it was an Esophageal spasm. I thought at the time I had throat cancer or something, becuase if you look up those symptoms, that comes up right away and it scared me to death. My new doctor is treating a girl that for the longest time, she would have to "Gulp" her food down becuase she had the forward head posture. She would actually throw up a lot because of it, and I dont' know how her parents came to see a tmj specialist, but during treatment, this has totally subsided. Forward head posture can literally cut off your airway, to an extent, and cause spasms and difficulty swallowing. Not fun at all.....

Re: Swallowing

I didn't realise it could be so serious. I find it interesting and it never amazes me the mass of symptoms throughout the whole body a disfunction of the jaw can cause and how each of us experiences different symptoms at different stages of TMJD and at differing levels of pain. I know for me personally this swallowing difficulty can be really upsetting, as if eating isn't already difficult enough! Plus like you mentioned, the panic attacks it causes too, when sometimes I feel like I'm gasping for breath.

I really can't wait for my splint therapy to start, I know I'm in for tough times ahead but it'll be worth it for the end result.
