Unhappy disc TM Joint ?

I was wanting to ask any of you with this problem if when bending over to do something and raising back up if you have a lot of pressure/pain shoot through your head? Also when you get a headache from this is the pressure really bad in your head as you try to sit from standing or trying to lay down ?

Re: disc TM Joint ?

Teri,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I thought I was the only one that this happens to. My family thinks I'm a wackadoodle when I tell them about these particular headaches. It's like when I change position my jaw hurts. I'm sorry that you're in pain, but you've made my day. You've validated some of my pain.
Have a great weekend.
Peggy

Re: disc TM Joint ?

I don't get these exact symptoms but where my neck connects to my head is messed up from my jaw for sure! i get all kinds of unpleasant symptoms in this area. Sometimes when I turn my head suddenly (when something startles me for example) I get the sharpest hottest burning pain, which can last for about an hour!!

I also do get headaches from this as well. I explain it my family and friends like this: the jaw bone is connected to the neck bone, the neck bone is connected to the arm bone, and the arm bone is connected to the back bone. This helps them understand why I am up all night with pain in my hand but why I blame my TMJD...or why my back and shoulders are always so tense...

I hope you are receiving care from a doctor who can help you recover!!

Re: disc TM Joint ?

Thank you Peggy and Bluebug for your replies. I been doing research on my problems/symptoms it keeps coming back to TMJ except I never did fine anything on the pressure part. I haven't seen a specialist in TMJ yet. I have had a CAT scan which was normal I go to see my dr Thursday again in hopes he will have a MRI done with the jaw, neck pain and bad headaches then I plan to go from there. I also have a lot of pain where my neck connects to my head to. Makes me feel like my head is a bowling ball and my neck is a toothpick and the bowling ball is sitting on the toothpick trying to hold the bowling ball up. The headaches are so bad (with cheek pain, jaw pain, back of my neck pain, ear pain and then the pressure with it you think its going to pop the top of your head off. when I get the headaches I'm not able to do anything but lay there wishing I could cut my head off. They are worse then the migraines I have had. What do you guys take for them? Advil doesn't even touch the pain my dentist has me to take a lortab 7.5/500MG every four hours follow with Advil in between the four hours. Seems like it takes forever to kick in and start giving me some relieve. Ice packs only make my head hurt worse heat seem to help some.

I notice that when I'm working outside lifting rocks etc. or lifting my one yr old granddaughter up and down alot later on is when I get those headaches. What seems to trigger your headaches????

Re: disc TM Joint ?

Oh yes, bending down, lifting anything heavy or changing the head position it all causes a sudden reaction in my head. First, it's really like smth shooting into the head but then it's not like a real headache - I can't show where it hurts but it's a terrible state. I call it "next to unconscious" b/c this is how it feels like, and it feels so bad that I can't even concentrate enough to feel what exactly feels so bad.

From my experience and understanding what happens is that the head "goes out of the socket" , as one PT called it. It usually happens when the jaw goes out forward while in bending it should get to the back, as they call it to CR- centric relation position.
When the head goes out, the tail bone goes up putting the lower back into lordosis which is surely not good for the back.

I think the head issue happens when either the jaw cannot go to CR b/c some tooth is on the way, or b/c there are no teeth to touch in that position (when the bite was lowered, for example). It can also happen with the open bite but if the rest is fine then this can possibly be compensated with the tongue.
Sorry, if I am too technical. If you are interested I can share more of my observations and learning on the bites.

Hi--Sorry to hear all you are going through. Yikes, please if you can stop lifting anything until you can get to a qualified tmj specialist after your x-rays are done. What set your problems off do you think? Did you have any recent dental work done that caused your jaw muscles to react in a bad way? Hopefully you are a muscular tmj case, they are easier to treat early on. I've had tmj for almost 20yrs., so I know what you are going through. Good Luck!

Re: disc TM Joint ?

Thank you members for all your info. I had thought I cause it when I had a jaw tooth cap, then root canal and then had it pulled. Now I cant keep from wondering if I didn't cause my problem in early spring laying flagstone around my koi pond then digging and placing edging stones. The stones are very heavy figure must had done something to my jaw and neck then lifting and carrying the stone, placing it in the right spot. I just know now I can not do any work bending over or lifting, causes great pain. Then notice that is when I got those killer headaches when I did do it. I have had to slow down some on how many times I pick up on my 1 yr old granddaughter after just a few times I can feel it in my jaw and neck. I did have a dr appointment on Thursday but cancel it and made one with the dentist Thursday instead going to talk it over with him first if he thinks it could be TMJ he will refer me to a TMJ dentist in a bigger town. I do wear a bite guard at night for years from chipping my teeth from grinding them at night. By the way what do you all take for those headaches? They are just to darn painful

Re: disc TM Joint ?

Just an update: I went a week ago last Thursday to the dentist said he didn't think it was TMJ. He sent me to a Oral & Maxillofacial Dr. I seen this pass Tuesday. He also said it wasnt TMJ said a few things it could be one was called "Myofascial" ( when I got home looked up the symptoms it was just like what I have been doing) but wanted me to go see a Neurology. I went yesterday to see that dr which is 1 1/2 hour drive one way. He really didn't know what is going on but wants me to do another CT Scan to rule out a "Aneurysm". Will have that done this coming week and go back to see him again Friday so its a wait and see thing

Re: disc TM Joint ?

It sounds like your sternocleidomastoid is inflammed. Google it and you can see where that muscle is located. But if you are experiencing pain bending from side to side to side, THAT is the muscle that does that. It also supports the neck.

My recommendation: I go to a pain clinic and get injections of anti-inflammatories in my points of pain which are on my face and head. It hurts but is very relieving.

Re: disc TM Joint ?

velvetrance...It does sound a lot like what I have sounds a lot better then "Aneurysm". I still think I must had done something moving and placing all those flagstones seems to me the best I can tell that is when the problems started. I had a bad spell Wednesday was in so much pain and pressure (don't know how a head can hurt so much and not blow up) that the Advil or Lortab wasn't working. Called hubby to come home from work to take me to the ER when he got here the pain had ease a little but still in a lot of pain. Called my MD first before leaving the nurse called me back and told me to take my Naproxen with the lortab by that time I could stand the pain so I didn't go on to the ER. I don't know what it was if it was the naproxen or not took another Naproxen before going to bed then another when I woke up. That day I felt like a new women no pain/hurting at all and still feel good. Still worry to death about the CT Scan to rule out an Aneurysm

I sincerely doubt Aneurysm and moreso muscle spasm. This sounds like something you could do in physical therapy. It does not sound serious. Because it's in the head it can seem a lot more threatening but I really think you strained a muscle. Are you having problems with your ears?

velvetrance......do you have sternocleidomastoid problems? What are your symptoms? My ears only hurt when the bad head pain/headache starts.

Re: disc TM Joint ?

I do. All those muscles in your head are connected. So the SCM spasms are something I do have. What makes your ears hurts though is the pterygoid and those close to the condyle. When my headaches start it is usually behind the eye.

velvetrance...How did they figure out it was your sternocleidomastoid? Do you have a lot of pressure in your head when you are in pain?
