who can I go to to treat this?

I must start off by saying I am really at my wits end. The pain is so annoying and sleeping and eating are a big problem. I do not have any dental insurance, so getting help is rough. I tried the chiropractor but it is $20 a visit and going even once a week is cost prohibitive and it didn't help anyway. Acupuncture helped a bit but my medical insurance doesn't cover it, so what's left? Who can help? If it's a physical therapist, how do I get a prescription without dental insurance? My medical insurance wont' pay a thing for this and it was submitted b ya neurodentist I went to for an evaluation. They submitted a letter saying I needed treatment for 17 different things but never said tmj hoping they would cover it but they wont'. Sorry for such a long post, but I really need help. THANKS!!!!!!

HI--Sorry for what you are going through. Tmj is awful. I could think of about 1000 other things that I would trade it in for, but that's just a dream of mine. Anyways, unfortunately, tmj treatment is extremely expensive, if you can have it billed under mayofacial pain disorder your ins. company may cover that diagnosis. As far as $$, can you use credit right now to pay so you can at least find a good tmj specialist? Where are you living, and maybe one of us can refer you to a good one. As far as physical therapy, that alone will not cure tmj, you need help from a really good tmj specialist, someone who will take x-rays and do a thorough exam on you to see the condition of your joints, teeth, etc.. I personally, and I'm sure many people on here will agree with me, that tmj dentists charge extraordinary amounts for treatment, and usually want to be paid right away if you don't have dental or medical coverage for it. THis, in my opinion has to stop, because there are so many sick people out there with this disorder that can't even get help because of their outrageous fees. It's disgusting. Ok--I'll get off my soapbox.

Re: who can I go to to treat this?

If 20$ a week is pushing it, finding a TMJ doctor is going to be a problem.
Google search your area and "TMJ Specialist". That's the best thing you can do. Or tell us on here and we can generally find one since most of us have been looking for the right doctors for years.

Since I'm broke from finding out what I DIDN'T have I qualified for CareCredit at my TMJ Dr's Office. It's put on a credit card type of thing and financed so by the time I'm better and can work, I can actually pay it off. TMJ treatment, depending on severity, can be $3500-$5000. What's so expensive is the splints and X-Rays, treatment itself isn't pricey. What you can do is until you can afford it try going to a pain clinic to at least get you out of misery until you can afford the specialist. Pain doctors are expensive too but they aren't going to be as bad. They can put you on long term medication and do injections that help out a lot.

It took me a long time to have someone help me with this...I've suffered for three years until I found people who cared about me enough to help. But don't worry, you won't be stuck that way forever.

Re: who can I go to to treat this?

Thanks so much for your reply. I went to a neurodentist who gave me a two and a half hour exam with x-rays, a tomograph and other tests. He was very thorough. He said I have arthritis in the jaw on both sides along with a few other things. I have osteoarthritis in my knees so i am not surprised about the jaw. That day cost $700 and the total treatment would be $6500. I have been out of work so that isn't an option at the moment. I appreciate what you said about getting the right treatment and that physical therapy alone won't do it. My insurance wouldn't cover anything even though he tried to bill as facial pain and arthritis. UGH!!! We all pay so much, why should a facial joint be treated different than any other? It is very frustrating, but that's my soapbox rant.

Thanks again, I hope you are well.

Re: who can I go to to treat this?

You may want to try a dental school or university in your area - the cost of tmj and pain mgmt treatment can be much less there.

I live in debt b/c of various tmj treatments and therapies - if you have good credit try looking into credit cards that cover medical and dental expenses that offer 0% financing for 12 mos - I can't say this is the best option b/c if treatment doesn't work you still have to pay it off - but if it does help and you are able to return to work and pay it off - it may work for you.

I took out a home equity line of credit - I figured if I was going to go bankrupt trying to fix this mess I might as well do it in a big way - at some point I know I will have to sell the house, settle all my debt and come away with nothing in my pockets - so its a gamble - but it will be worth it if I can get my health back at some point and be able to go back to work and just start over again.

Re: who can I go to to treat this?

Thank you all. I know I need to do something. The closest clinic in an hour and a half away in a really bad part of the state, so I dont' think I can do that right now, but maybe they have an off sight office I can try to go to. I know I should break down and go for the $6500 on a credit card, but being I haven't worked, I am nervous to add that amount. I am out of work, not from the tmj though, from the economy, my job slowed down, and my hubby may be by October, so I am really afraid so spend anything extra at the time.

I am not trying to be negative, just realistic and knowing what has and hasn't worked for you guys does help me to decide the course of action.

Thanks so much and have a pain free day.
