To what extent does TMJD affect your life?

I'm curious to know how TMJD affects your life? What impact does it have on your life and what areas of your life does it affect?

I've had to take today off work because of the jaw muscle being in spasm, it's caused the usual headaches, shoulder and neck stiffness, I've got all sorts of strange and bizarre clicks going on in my skull and neck oh and the wonderful earache where it feels like someone is stabbing my ear with a knife! So time off work is one area of my life I'm affected, my weigh and energy levels are an issue due to not being able to eat a proper full diet. i am snappy and moody with family and I think the worst part is actually trying to decide wether to have another baby or not, all because of the damn TMJD!

I worry that any treatment I'll need would have to be postponed if I were pregnant, I worry that by being stressed due to the TMJD whilst pregnant would affect baby in some way and once baby is born, how would I cope if my TMJD got worse? (I feel that my TMJD has got worse since having my first child almost 12 months ago) So for me I feel that this damn disorder is currently having a huge impact on my life in such a depressing way. I wish I could be happy about the decision to have another baby without wondering, in fact if I should?

How about you, what areas of your life is TMJD making miserable?

I am sorry you are having so much trouble. Dealing with this and a baby must be so hard, I was lucky that mine started in my 40's and it just getting really bad now.

It is starting to affect my life alot. I cannot sleep making the days hard to get through. Eating anything is rough and the pain is getting worse and hard to function. Yawning causes sharp pain too.

I understand how you feel and hope something helps for you. As for another baby, I cannot help you there, it's a personal choice. Can you get any treatment for the tmj that would help ease the pain? That may make a huge difference all around.

I hope you have a better day today.

Hi Andrea--I'm sorry your having so much pain and muscular spasms lately. It can take a toll on you mental state, as well as your home and your family members. Some days I can barely do the laundry and housework, I honestly don't know how I would cope if I had to try to take care of the house, 2 kids, and go to a job. I wouldn't make it. IT's hard treating tmj when you are pregnant as well because if your tmj specialist uses tens units, you can't use those on pregnant women. It's a big part of some dentists treatment, especially if they are using it for the neuromuscular testing, etc. Hang in there, try to relieve your stress levels, and know if you have a bad day, to let the pain go and try to be positive knowing you are almost entering treatment soon...when is your mri scheduled? I hope soon. If you have a good massage therapist you can go to in the meantime, that may help, as well as using a heating pad everyday for at least 30 min. on your upper back and neck. Doing just that has reduced my spasms by 30% in the last week and a half. For me , that's huge because I was ready to hit the looney bin from the pain. It was unbearable. Hang in there! ......J.

Re: To what extent does TMJD affect your life?

What I finally found out was TMJ has had a massive effect on my life. I lost my job, had to rent my house out and move in with my parents. At my worst I was so dizzy I couldn't leave the house and was so tired I would get up in the morning have a shower and then go back to bed again. I was sleeping ALL THE TIME.

Re: To what extent does TMJD affect your life?

i thought i was going crazy, lost my job, lost all my money and assets to dr.s who didn't know what it was. moved three different places trying to find a specialist all the while being homeless or couch surfing. i finally met my husband who couldn't stand to see me in pain and made me move in with his mother so i could be in caring arms of people who understood the disorder. the guy i was seeing when all this happened was a horrible person to me, a drug addict, and thought i was faking it.

this whole time doctors thought i was trying to get pills, it was until x-rays were done they quit making that assumption and saw my jaw dislodged to the left by 5mm and something was wrong with my spine.
'
tmj made me lose friends, jobs, i can't/sometimes can work a normal job, i don't go out, i sleep a lot, i no longer paint or write and the worst part is my family disowned me as being a drug addict liar and that i was just nuts.

i lost a $800/week job (good for a 21 year old)
17,000 car
iMac G5
5,000 in furniture
my dog, Balki
i developed PTSD and depression and began to feel suicidal and made several attempts because i thought i was losing my mind.
i started drinking as a coping skill around 2008 which induced black outs.
i actually did go crazy because of the pain and landed in a psych ward because i was sick of doctors treating me like a junkie i just quit taking everything and had severe withdrawals.

the pain is not as bad. i, occassionally, get migraines and some jaw pain but my biggest problem is vertigo. i cannot function on life and understand what's going on around me; Wal-Mart is a nightmare. I would rather feel pain than constant confusion.

I am new to this site and have had TMJ for nearly a year now. It affects my life alot. I get depressed easily and don't socialise like I used to. Nobody seems to understand what you are going through. My husband has been very supportive but I think even he is sick of me constantly going on about it. I try and ignore it and think how lucky I am not to have something worse like cancer, but its still hard to deal with and live with. I work full time and sometimes just want to cry whilst at work. Other days are fine. I am wearing a lower orthodic plate 24/7 to correct my bite. Mine is apparently all muscular and no joint damage (thank goodness) and I've taken up meditation to try and relax me more. I'm a clencher so I get frequent headaches and face pain but its definitely improved since Christmas. Hope this helps.......I am glad we have websites to share our stories and know we are not alone with this horrible disorder.

HI--I'm so glad you made it! (and glad that your tmjd is mostly muscular, that in my opinion is easier to treat..) You will really benefit from cranial sacral therapy if you can find a good one..especially someone who is extremely knowledgable in intra-oral massage and mayofacial release. Just wanted to say hi quickly this morning,,I have to get the kids to school...
Later--J.

Thanks for that. I have seen a guy who specialises in oral massage and also have regular massages and acupuncture which helps. I've also been told to keep stress to a minimum, so I am meditating daily now but I am a very anxious type person which makes it hard to relax as often as I would like.
Wishing you a great weekend.
Debski
