Headaches....

I know everybody gets 'em and we all have certain ones....but I have a question to see if anyone else has the same kind as me.

I've gotten all sorts, but the one I get most often, and I don't even know if it is considered a headache...but whenever my ear pounds with pain, I also get a pounding on the top of my head at the same time- almost like something is connected there. Strangely enough, my tmj problems are mostly on my left and when that pain started it was pain in the ear/top of head...but when my right jaw started hurting, too, the pain has presented itself in the exact same way except opposite side...my ear will have throbbing pain and then I have pain literally on top of my head on that side.

is there a nerve or something that runs from the ear to the top of the head? It's so weird, b/c there is no pain in between.

Oh, well...stranger things have happened with TMJ.

Re: Headaches....

I get that too, someone once told me it was sinuses as well. It seems to have a connection to me. They are all a problem for me, the TMJ and sinuses. I actually rub the top of my head because it just hurts. Yes, this mystery illness causes all sorts of weird pains.

I hope you feel better.

HI guys---Have you both tried Cranial Sacral therapy yet for you tmjd? IT can really help put your head "back" together, so to speak. When you have muscular spasms in your head, jaw, neck, they can pull the skull bones out of whack, and cause pressure and pain to start..This treatment can really help put you back together.
Ps, You need to really investigate and get a good referral, not all cranial people are great. Ask around in health food stores, chiro. offices, or tmj specialists who they refer patients to.

you know when you get a charlie horse in the arch of your foot? well, that's a spasm..I get them along my jaw bone, and in my upper back. You can feel the pulling of the muscles, and definitely pain associated with it. In my opinion, this is the worst symptom of tmjd besides locking.

Re: Headaches....

the headache is not really a headache but as jmitchell said it is similar to a charley horse. there are muscles all in your head compensating for a gearing problem in your teeth and they go into spasm when that is compromised.

it feels like you are wearing a very tiny helmet and putting it on really tight. its more like pressure. it is mainly affecting the occipital and temporalis muscles for it to go all around the head. the best thing for it is really is an ice pack. warm moist heat works better on the neck.

cranio sacral therapy can help this but it's very temporary if you don't get to the root of the problem which is, if you have TMJ, a fitting of the teeth; the pain will keep coming back. if CST works all together then posture and neck strains were an issue which is something you can more likely fix on your own.

Re: Headaches....

I am still trying to understand the pain. Let me describe mine and you can tell me if that is it....

I have a sharp pain that goes from my ear to the top of my head (if my right side is bothering me, it is that ear to the top RIGHT on my head...if it is my left side...the pain presents itself exactly the same way, just opposite side)..and it is sharp...like what some people describe as icepick headaches.

That is the temporalis muscle and usually hurts due to tooth grinding. When you clinch your teeth you use that and the massater. it's also [temporalis] the muscle that moves when you wiggle your ears.
