can grinding teeth while asleep cause twitching?

I have tmj haven't been diagnosed but my jaw clicks all the time when I eat. My ears don't hurt too much only once in a blue moon.

I tend to clench my mouth when I sleep. I notice I've been twitching in and around my mouth, lips and nose lately. Is this tmj related?

Re: can grinding teeth while asleep cause twitching?

I got the twitching as part of the TMJ deal as well. It was only around the left eye where I get the worse pain. This symptom resolved after wearing a pivot appliance

Re: can grinding teeth while asleep cause twitching?

I asked the TMJ specialist about the twitching and he told me its a muscle spasm.

As I healed from surgery and the inflammation went down my bite started to change. We did the chomping down on the bite strips and the marks on the appliance were all on one side so he rebalanced the appliance and the twitching and eye pain eased off.

I realised that the whole masticatory system is so finely balanced, both sides need to be working in unison otherwise muscles on one side will become overwhelmed, go into spasm and create major pain.

There are people out there who understand the dynamics and can treat us - its just sometimes hard finding them.

Re: can grinding teeth while asleep cause twitching?

I had a displaced disc in my left jaw which was treated with repositioning splint therapy. A few years later, I developed a permanent twitch in my mouth on that side, no neurological cause found. I haven't found anyone down here in Ft Lauderdale that has been able to help me with this problem. When my jaw is stressed more than normal, the twitching gets worse.
