Most drs say it is the cartilidge moving within the tmj joints or the shfting of the skull sutures (cranial and facial bones).

I would think it has something more to do with the ears if that is what you are talking about.

Every time I swallow I hear snap crackle pop...but it's not the kind of crackling your ears do when you chew or open and close your jaw...it's almost like a fluid sound.

I can't remember the last time I swallowed and didn't hear something in my ears.

Re: what causes a rice krispies like crackling in the head?

Well there's a diff between ear crackling due to trapped or accumulated fluid versus joint cracking and cranial facial noises or crackling elsewhere within the body which is called crepitus.

Crepitus is a medical term to describe the grating, crackling or popping sounds and sensations experienced under the skin and joints and is usually the result of bones rubbing or the possible presence of arthritis or some other form of degenerative disease but not always.

Those who have experienced musculoskeletal changes in addtion to or as a result of their tmj dysfunction - such as changes in facial appearance or the shape of their head, change in posture or positioning of the clavicals (collar bones) or c-spine and spinal alignment, etc more than likely also heard some crackling as this occurred over time.
