finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

My MRI shows that I have an anterior subluxation of the right disc in my TMJ when my mouth is closed and there is partial recapture when my mouth is open. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what is the name of the doctor you went to who cured it without surgery? Dr. Tanenbaum in NYC & LI is $510 for a consult and $395 for each follow up so I cannot use him - he is WAY too expensive.
I've had 8 lidocaine trigger point sessions which reduced the pain a bit but now it's leveled off; I also have an upper bite plate which hasn't helped.
Thanks for any names of great doctors who look for answers other than surgery.
I'm planning to go to the dental clinic at NYU in November; anyone ever had luck there?
THANKS - I'm losing hope!

Hi--You might want to look up Dr. Peter Ferro..He is a Functional Jaw ORthodontist, and a tmjd neuromuscular specialist. He lectures all over the country as well. I don't know what his fees are, but any tmjd specialist is expensive. Try to get it covered under medical --mayofacial pain disorder, MPD. take care!!! J.

Dr Hoffman - I think his first name is David - not sure though - I have heard very good things about him from other tmj drs and chiros. He is a surgeon though - from what I am told - but if he can't provide non-surgical treatment I am sure he can recommend you to a colleague who could.

I went to Tanenbaum too - he wanted $60K to do a full mouth reconstruction to restore my bite.

I agree with Thelma-Louise that Dr. David Hoffman is an excellent doctor. He's an oral surgeon, but he does everything he can to avoid surgery. Dr. Hoffman works out of Staten Island Hospital.
Good luck.
Peggy

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

Just wanted everyone to know that Dr. Hoffman only does SURGICAL repair of TMJ issues.
He developed an artificial TMJ joint so I guess his main purpose is to use it on patients. His office gave me the name of Dr. Martin Bassiur who is on Long Island where I live. I looked him up on line; he had very impressive credentials; however, it said he was no longer accepting new patients.

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

I would call Hoffman's office back up and advise them that Basiur is no longer accepting new patients so they don't refer others to him and also ask for another referral. Also if that is the only dr he refers non-surgical patients to he may be able to contact Basiur directly on your behalf and they may make an exception - its worth a shot. If Hoffman is a good surgeon I am sure then he knows of other good non-surgical tmj drs as not everyone needs surgery and even after surgery most need some type of followup care I would think by a qualified tmj specialist - unless he only provides post non-surgical treatment to those he operates on. I looked Bassiur up and it seems he may not be in a private practice put part of a group - is teaching and also provided Expert Wtiness Testimony - although it did say he was not accepting new patients - I am not sure how accurate some sites are though - but call his office - if he is part of a group it may be a group of tmj drs so one of them might be good to see or ask his office for a referral as well.

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

Thanks, Thelma-Louise, Great suggestions on both counts; possibly his office would put in a call for me or, in the alternative, maybe Bassiur is part of a group. I wrote an e-mail to Bassiur's office, almost begging for them to see me, but they didn't reply as yet. However, I'll put in a call, too. Did you have luck with someone for your TMJ? Did you have a slipped disc, too? Sorry, I'm new to message boards, so I just assume everyone on here has similar issues. Forgive me if I'm wrong!

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

No I have a cranial cervical issue brought on by poor dental work that induced tmj symptoms so its all muscular and structural alignment problems compounded by incorrect treatment by some tmj dentists that basically destroyed my teeth and bite.

Welcome to the boards btw.

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

I don't know if this ever posted, but Dr. Hoffman does only surgical treatment of TMJ; his office gave me the name of Dr. Martin Bassiur, of Woodmere, Long Island who only does NON-surgical treatment. I'll let all of you know how it goes after I see him in mid-October. Dr. Bassiur also takes my insurance, which is fantastic. I have an appointment at the NYU clinic but I may cancel that after seeing Dr. Bassiur. (BTW, I've had 9 weeks of lidocaine trigger point injections plus an upper bite plate; my TMJ pain has been relieved, but not eradicated. Hence, my continued search for a cure.)

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

So Dr Bassiur is accepting new patients; I guess the online sites are wrong or have not been updated recently. Its a good thing you called.

I went to NYU's TMJ dept and their TMJ Pain Mgmt clinic - I got lost in the shuffle so to speak; no one seemed to know what dr I should see even though Dr Tannenbaum gave me the names of several to ask for; then they gave me tel numbers to call back when "so and so" was supposed to be there and after a few calls they couldn't even remember who I was or what they were trying to arrange for me. I did go to their Pain Mgmt clinic for several months which did help as I was prescribed several meds - after some trial and error I found a couple that worked better than orthers I had tried - so eventually I just let my PCP prescribe them to save me the trip downtown.

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

Well today I went to Dr. Martin Bassiur who is an oral surgeon but does not do surgery; his practice is limited to TMJ and sleep apnea. Though my insurance covered the consult, he then informed me that his treatments were not covered. He wanted to give me a flat plane appliance and do 3 injections of lidocaine and cortisone and manipulate the disc to try to get it to go back into position. Has anyone ever had this done; if so, was it successful (and did not recur)?? Please let me know; I don't want to pay this out of pocket if I don't hear about it being a good type of treatment!!! Help!! (Dr. Hoffman's office gave me his name) Bassiur said if it didn't work, I'd need surgery but I refuse since I've read that surgery for TMJ has not been successful in most cases. THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES!!

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

Try doing an Advanced Search on disc plication on this forum as there may be some previous posts regarding this - of course there are diff types of surgery for tmj - and although all surgeries are invasive in nature and therfore bring certain risks - not all surgeries carry the same level of risk.

Also you can do an Advanced Search on jaw manipulation - this may also result in some previous posts regarding this procedure.

My daughter is a patient of Dr. Hoffman's. Our experience is that he is trying to do everything possible to avoid joint replacement, repeatedly characterizing it as a last resort. Unfortunately, her TMJ condition is degenerative and she has had 3 surgeries so far, with bilateral joint replacement likely in the future. But Dr. Hoffman seems to be recommending and doing as much as reasonably possible to put off that surgery -- even though he has invented an artificial TMJ. We are very grateful for his conservative approach. Good luck to all.

Re: finding a doctor in Long Island or NY

thanks, again, Thelma-Louise; I'll do those advanced searches.
good luck to rafkind's daughter; I'm sorry she had to have 3 surgeries; possibly Dr. Hoffman is being conservative because she's already had a few surgeries and there is just so much trauma our joints can handle. best of luck going forward!
I just wish someone would come on this site who's had their TMJ issue resolved. As I previously mentioned, my right sided TMJ was completely cured 20 years ago with just a few months of lidocaine/decadron injections, which did not hurt at all. My current problem is a disc problem and is on the left side.
