tmj face numbness

anyone have facial numbness............i have had this all day mostly on left side checks chin and lips..........had it a little on and off over last few weeks but mostly a new tmj symptom for me..............

will contact my neuromuscualr dentist next week...........have got my repostioning splint in again after he ajusted and filed it down a bit......i can actaully wear it now as it feels good in my mouth unlike before..however its only been a week i hd the numbness before i started the splint (but forgot to mention this symptom) so i no its not from the splint

the best i can figure out is the joint is irratating the nerves in my face or around my joint which is giving me numbness............its freaky!!!

would this be a correct guess
thanks

HI there--What my physical therapist said about numbness in your arms, neck, or face from tmj is that when the muscles are in such spasm, they contract around the nerves, and cause numbness. I actually got this after a repositional splint was given to me because I had been so out of whack for so long, the position it was putting my muscles in in my jaw and face was causing major spasms for a while. AFter a few months, with the new jaw position, my muscles began to SLOWLY back off and the spasms subsided to where I don't want to rip my head off..lol. For me though, this took almost 5 months. With severe cases, it can take a lot longer to see any positive effects of splint therapy. It's not an overnight relief, so to speak by any means. I wouldn't worry about the numbness for now, but i would definitely tell the dentist about it. The area that is being affected, they may suggest you get ultrasound therapy, or use a heating pad on it daily, or massage therapy. This will all help in the healing process. Take care! J.

thanks mitchell
yes you are right i searched the tmj site and it is quite common thank goodness.........actaully for some reason i used ice and it worked lol.........i guess it helped the poor irrated nerves...........i wonder if my splint like you flared it up a little as it is repostioning my jaw to the correct place and will prob take a while for my muslces to sort their life out lol
thanks heaps for your reply its good to no that im normal in the tmj world lol

Re: tmj face numbness

Hi - I posted a post a few weeks back about this exact symptom. I have been having alot of numbness from my TMJ spasms. It starts around the front of my ear;sometimes goes up to the temple area and mostly runs down my jaw into my chin but not quite that far. Sometimes I get it in my cheek area and sometimes my upper or lower lip - mostly on my right side. It freaks me out. I did not get too many responses about it though. Maybe not too many get the numbness and I am almost 100% positive its from my jaw which has been giving me alot of pain lately. Both sides. I have had TMJ a very long time, but last few months now have developed a clicking on the right side. I need to find a specialist in NJ and go for help. Just not sure who to go to.
