Don't buy night Gelb Appliance

I've been a TMJ sufferer for 22 years and 14 months ago it kicked my butt and gave me ringing in ears, ear pain and worst VERTIGO. I still have vertigo 15 months later. Would love to shoot myself in the head. Life sucks. I've tried everything in the world to fix this which countless dentists say is from toot extractions and braces as a kid. I though I found my savor....Dr. Michael Gelb founder of TMJ research and projessor of TMJ at NYC. I was so desperate that I went to see him and BEFORE the Dr. even walked in the room an assistants was taking molds of my mouth as if they sell the same plan to everyone who walks in the door. After the molds, Dr. Gelb did some a very quick evaluations and spoke to me for about 10 mins....then I was shown a day time retainer and a night time one. I was so dizzy and in so much pain that I would do anything. Next, they take you into a private office where the BILLING chick
FINALLY reveals the cost is this ****. I asked 4 people who what the cost of this was and they all played dumb. The day time appliance to move my jaw forward was suppose fix everything and cost $1300! The night time piece of **** was $3600!!! I am so broke I can hardly feed my kids but bought into it anyway. They have made me worse and the night time guard has broken twice in 2 months! It takes a month to get in if you need an adjustment which they promise to see you every 2-4 weeks for appliance adjustments. ********! Now, I get to see a Chiropractor who works with him is is helping more and told me to stop wearing the $3600 appliance. I refuse to pay for it since it's cheap, does damage and Dr. Gelb's own Chiro who works in his office said dont' wear it. The Chiro is helping slightly, but I have to choose between his $100 visits and food for my kids. fun.

When I went to him they got my medical insurance provider to pay for the appliances so their billing reps are pretty savy and well trained and I do agree with your assessment of the dog and pony show. I too see a chiro affiliated with him who has done wonders in helping me recover despite still having the tmj and now a total lack of any bite whatsoever due to all the various dentists I have seen who only made matters worse.

Re: Don't buy night Gelb Appliance

Hi Thelma....I unfortunately don't have health insurance and Lisa the billing person made me drop $1300 that second then the rest in a $3600 in a week. The made every attempt to get me to pay the full $5,000 on my first visit. I see Dr. Klein from his office who is helping way more. I am fighting with the Lisa the billing lady not to pay for the night time pice of crap since it broke on the front teeth as I was simply taking it out of my mouth the first month. Their whole business about "come in for adjustments every 2 weeks for $250" I found to be a joke! They are sooooo OVER BOOKED that the patient suffers. He's damaged my bit bit time! Dr. Klein the Chiro is fantastic and helping the most, but I've already done 7 month of that crap last year too. But, Dr. Klein is doing things my other guy never accomplish. 15 months of this vertigo and to be given so much hope by Dr. Gelb himself by him swearing he could fix me is painful.

People...if you see him, just get the day appliance because you can wear it at night too. Dr. Klein himself even said don't wear the nigh-time crap. Hurt all the time and they can NEVER seem give you time to really adjust it to your bit when it hurts...rush, rush, rush,

BTW.....you are NEVER LEFT BY YOUR SELF IN THAT OFFICE! They will have someone sit in the room with you for an hour until Dr. Gelb comes in. This way you can't discuss the dog and pony show going on openly with any who came with you to the visit. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT and go more for his Chiro guys than the appliances!

Re: Don't buy night Gelb Appliance

Thanks for sharing your story. I am very concerned by the fact that this Dr. Gelb seems to think that his one invention is a cure all. If your tmj specialist isn't willing to be open to using other splints then that should be a warning sign. TMJ is a very individual problem to be solved and no one thing works with everyone. I have been researching tmj specialists and I will only see one that is open to figuring out which splint is right for me, if they take the one size fits all approach then they are NOT for me.
I am considering a consultation with Dr. Mark Piper is st. pete florida. I called and he does a lot more than just surgery. The consultation is a full day workup(7:30am to 7:30pm) with CT scans, MRI scans and lots of time with the doctor. Dr. Piper is also willing to give you a treatment plan and coordinate with another provider if you don't live in the area, which I think is great. I'm still not sure if I"m going to go see him.
I'm really sorry that you spent all that money and it didn't work for you, I hope you are able to find a solution. Best of luck.

Re: Don't buy night Gelb Appliance

I have been seeing Dr Klein weekly for 3 yrs now and he has done more for me than any other dentist or chiro has - pulled me out of a world of total body dysfunction and pain where I didn't even feel human anymore - I see him in his Scarsdale office - I can't say how much this guy has helped me or enough good things about him and I am glad you are seeing the same results. I was a little disappointed however when he allowed his name to be put on Gelb business cards and the web site and be associated or affiliated with the Gelb practice but he said as long as he is helping people that is what matters and I guess from that perspective its true. I was referred to him by my current dentist so when I met him I told him don't even suggest Gelb to me as I have been there and done that and he made it seem like he was not keen on him either. Ask Dr Klein for a referral to another dentist - he knows a lot of the good ones in the area and has also seen who actually helps his patients and who does not.
