Back in Jan. of 2010, my saliva gland under the left side of my jaw swelled... my primary doc thought it was a stone. Later I noticed a "vein" under my left was also swollen.
I was told that was a lymph node that swelled because the gland got infected. The vein never went away.
A month later a pea-size lymph node next to the gland swelled. Once again, my doc wasn't concerned. Later that month I started having feeling a globus sensation in my throat.
In march, I had my first CT scan with contrast, and it found nothing wrong...
I went to an ENT to find out more. He said it was the same as my primary doc said, except he said the "lump in throat" feeling was LPR. I was told to keep an eye on the saliva gland (if it caused pain or no), and not to worry about the "lymph nodes."
A few months later, I felt a lot of pain in the gland area, and opted to have it removed. My ENT no longer did that surgery, so he referred me to another. He mentioned TMJ, but I really paid no mind at the time. While I waited for the surgery, I started to feel pain in other parts of my neck! It really freaked me out! I figured, get this gland out... so on August the 16th, I had the surgery. The pathology of the gland came back negative.
4 months later I noticed the pain not getting better, but worse. I went back to the ENT who did the surgery, and he told me it was TMJ. I just could not believe it. I do have a really bad popping jaw for over 30 years and never had any pain with it.
A few days later I tried to pinpoint the pain and found a "lump." (what I believe to be the lymph node that was near the gland. It seemed bigger, and was very painful to touch. Going back to my ENT, he told me it was a muscle, and still said it was TMJ. I demanded a better answer than that. So he ordered another CAT scan with contrast... and they still found nothing.
I've had blood tests... and nothing. I get numbness now in my face, arms, and hands at times, and the pain is worse, with my ENT telling me that it's just TMJ and what I think are lymph nodes are really muscles. I went back to my original ENT and he disagrees on some of the findings, and he ordered a full spine MRI, which I am waiting for my insurance to authorize.
Thanks for responding Amanda. I am not too sure about these message boards. I see many views, but not many responses.
The views are probably from people looking for answers too. So even though I am not getting much feedback, I will try to keep this updated for those who are looking for answers. But plzzzzzzzzzzz Any encouraging info would help.
Another painful "lymph node" was discovered on the side of my neck between the "vein" and jaw.
I am finally getting my MRI today, and hope all goes well. I WILL try to keep this thread updated.
im really interested in what you find out as ive had something a little similar to your symptoms for 9 months now! Ive always been very healthy and out of nowhere last April I started getting a dull ache down my left arm and sometimes it would feel numb. Well then the side of my neck started hurting too so i began to have major anxiety(at the time i was taking on staying home with 2 kids and full time college course online) and was convinced i had some kind of cancer as i could feels something almost lumpy in that side of my neck. Im actually going to school for nursing so i began researching the anatomy of the neck and went to my dr which all she said it was, was anxiety. So i tried to relax and during meantime switched drs and its actually someone i know personally so i trust her opinion(and for her not to write me off as crazy) and she agreed my SCM muscle is staying so tight and it feels atleast twice the size of the one on the left. Ive been having the feeling of something in my throat too off and on this whole time and was sent to an ENT where she did scope down my throat and everything looked fine. They also did a swallow test and that turned out good as well. The my dr wanted to rule out thyroid so ive had blood work and ultrasound and all are ok.
Im constantly feeling that side of my neck for lumps because im so paranoid they might be missing something. I want to get an MRI for my peace of mind but havent been able to afford it since we dont have insurance so ive tried to tell myself if it was something bad they would have found it already?
Anyways my dr thinks i might have a pinched nerve somewhere and it caused me to develop TMJ because the same side of my neck pain the area below my ear and behind my jaw will hurt so bad sometimes and i get pain in that ear as well.....do you get ear pain? I went to a massage therapist a few months back and she said my scalene muscles were tight and she did a deep and painful massage but the pain in my arm went away so for awhile i was relieved but the pain in my neck just seems to stay.
I had the MRI today... I have the films, but don't even want to guess what they mean. I visit my "good" ENT on Wed. for the results.
As I mentioned, along with everything else, I also had the globus sensation in my throat. CT scan found nothing wrong. My ENT did the scope down the nose (between 2 ENT's, I've had that done 4 times!), and they both said it was LPR. My GI doc disagreed... which now make me think the main problem is TMJ... we'll see.
I have some ringing or "fullness" sometimes... but my main pain seems to be in the neck (left side). I also wonder if the TMJ problem has pinched a nerve. Not sure, but will keep everyone posted.
Wow, I can't believe how many of the same symptoms I have, except mine are all on the right side of my neck, shoulder and upper chest. I have lately been having pain in the throat / windpipe area which sometimes feels like there is something "stuck" in the throat and no amount of food or drink seems to make this go away it just seems to resolve on it's own. It is really causing alot of anxiety because I keep thinking the worst
I'm sorry that I haven't kept up to date on this like I said I would... the MRI found that I had a slight bulging disc (which was completely unrelated)... thus, I had some cortisone shots done. It helped somewhat, but not entirely. I haven't been able to see a TMJ specialist yet (can't afford it), and now dealing with GERD issues (see new GI doc tomorrow)... so with the fact that all the tests have all come up negative, and the lymph/vein doesn't seem to be getting any bigger and/or painful, I have pretty much put the neck on the back burner for now.
I have also just returned from my follow up appointment with my Maxillo, he thinks I have GERD and wanted to prescribe me Nexium for reflux but has referred me to an ENT also for the burning sensation in my throat. He has also referred me for some Physio as I have a knot in my right shoulder blade area that hurts when I turn my head over to my left. I am so hoping that this know may be related to the stiffness in my neck just below the jaw line
