please help me out with this

i had braces for around 5 years when i was about 13, i was given a retainer but did not wear it. now 10 years 10 the line im experiencing jaw pain, lower jaw feels numb/sore/weak, i have headaches, and i have pain on my head, and around eyes, i also have pain on back of my head, and also shoulder, and back pain, my jaw also clicks. also my face has changed

i have been looking into jaw surgery for quite a while but reading here, it says jaw surgery should be last option. the most recommended option here is to wear splints, and go to a neuromuscular dentist.

Also should i get an oral and maxillofacial surgeon opionion. or who should i see. ay other advise on who i should see like a pjysical therapist or neuroligist, please help me out

Re: please help me out with this

I am no expert, but have had my splint for not even a week now and my symptoms are nearly gone! Prior to that I had ear pain, neck pain, upper back pain, horrible jaw pain, post nasal drip, you name it. Crossing fingers that we can make it permanent. I think you need to find a reliable TMJ specialist (I personally am not seeing a NM dentist, so can't speak to that angle). Find someone who specializes in facial pain. Look at credentials and the length of time they have been practicing. I agree, that surgery should be a last resort if you can help it. Oh get a good heating pad, 4-5 times a day on affected areas. Good luck to you!

you said you did not wear a retainer, have your teeth shifted? If they did, maybe your bite is not right anymore? I have a friend who had braces in her teens and without a retainer her teeth shifted and she got TMJD. She now does braces again. I am also doing braces, but for the 1st time. My teeth have shifted after dental work and the bad bite was causing stress on the joints.

good for you, hopefully the relief will last!

Re: please help me out with this

yes my teeth have shifted and affected my face shape... and now getting tmj pain.... my jaw feels lowered but my bite seems fine

is ur friend having braces to correct the bite or to worsen the bite then correct it with surgery

would regular braces correct bite??? i've red stories here that splint is best treatment..
