Re: Tmj crunching sound in ears

Hi Phillip1957,

Sorry to hear about your discomfort. The only place snap, crackle, pop should be heard is coming out of is a breakfast bowl! It's easy for others to poo-poo such issues but if they experienced it themselves for themselves months on end it might not be taken so lightly.

There are a lot of things that can resolve TMJ issues. I'm an example of that. Mired in pain and aggravating symptoms for a couple years before I finally (after many, many duds) found an excellent modern NM dentist and started splint therapy. I'm now in phase two braces and pain is almost gone! The thing is that most people do not see a truly qualified specialists. It takes tons of post grad education to really understand and treat this tricky disease. Most regular dentists who try and create repositional splints, or even night guards, for people with TMJD often end up worsening their issues. Proper treatment also costs a lot too - unbelievable that there' not coverage for the treatments that work. There is some coverage for things like surgery, which have a terrible track record and end of doing more harm also.

It sounds at this point like things haven't gotten out of control for you so you may not feel the need at this point to risk poverty in order to treat your issue. I just want to recommend you make an appointment for a consult with the best modern NM dentist in your state or province to assess the situation. Usually TMJD problems do not go away and if left untreated, get desperately painful. If you can nip things in the bud before this happens, it may be easier to treat and you may save yourself years of agony!

Wish you well in your recovery!

Re: Tmj crunching sound in ears

Hi there,

I'm just over one month in my tmj treatment. I'm wearing an orthotic covering all my lower teeth, 24/7. It is designed to hold my jaw in a specific position. I thought I'd share my experience since I can relate to that sound you mentioned.

Before wearing my orthotic, I also had grating sounds in my right tmj each time I opened my mouth. However, I can say after one month in my orthotic, the grating sound is now completely gone.

My main symptom however, which are muscular issues stay more or less the same for now; maybe a bit less intensity but I can't say it's a big difference. But it's only been a month so I'd need to give it more time.

Re: Tmj crunching sound in ears

Have you been checked to see if your disc is displaced? I use to have that noise, I called it my Capt. Cruch even tho I was not eating anything! It seemed so loud to me & I had a hard time beleiving no one around me could hear it also! Hope you get some answers and will be able to make it go away!
Take care!
Shirlett

Hi Shirlett,

What was it that helped you finally resolve the cereal-in-head issue?

Glad the Captain stopped his crunching in your noggin'

Re: Tmj crunching sound in ears

I had what was left of my original jaw joints removed and replaced bi-lateral with TMJ Concepts, which sometimes squeak...HAHA...so I went from one noise to another. The "squeak" is not all the time 24/7 like the crunching noise was. Hope you get some answers!
Take care!
Shirlett
