Tourettes vs. OCD

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but it is really bugging me. For the past two months, I've gotten rid of almost every habit I have except for abdominal jerking (very severe) and slight neck turning. I am convinced that I have tourettes syndrome. I just cannot stoping with my abdominal jerking. I do it at least 5-15 times a minute, all day long. It is extremely annoying. Several people have asked me if I had the hiccups. Now the question....How do I know if it's just me being obsessive compulsive, or if I have a serious problem? I feel like I am the one making myself do it, but I am not totally sure.

Re: Tourettes vs. OCD

My daughter has Tourette's and OCD. Some of her behaviors are difficult for me to distinguish between one and the other. She can tell the difference somehow - but she cannot explain to me how. (Tourette's and OCD are a very common pairing.)

Anyway, she read your post and said to tell you she thinks your movements are most likely Tourette's. She said Tourette's movements are less "thoughtful." OCD is more of a message that you have to do something to feel better or to avoid something bad happening. The messages play over and over... With Tourette's, you have to do the movements but there isn't a reason why.

Many people have a tic or two. Tourette's is typically diagnosed when the tics are multiple movements or movement tics and vocal tics. There are mental tics too. My daughter has all of the above.

I wish either of us could explain more clearly! I hope we're any help at all!

Lisa
