occipital neuralgia--has anyone been cured??

hello folks:

I have had a constant headache since july of 07. I have been told that i have occipital neuralgia most likely as a result of a punch to the back of the head in march of 07.

I recently had an occipital nerve block and it provided partial relief for about 3 days and then it came back with a vengance. Have gone to physical therapy for 5 weeks and that hasnt helped either.

Has anybody here been told that they have occipital neuralgia, had treatment and been cured? I am so desperate i cant begin to explain. My wife is pregnant and it will be our first but i havent even been able to rejoice at all because of the pain and depression.

I am interested in hearing from anybody with any kind of good news.

thanx in advance

Re: occipital neuralgia--has anyone been cured??

I am so sorry about your situation. I cannot imagine never having relief. I hope there are some answers for you very soon!!!

I was wondering-

Are there any websites or organizations dedicated specifically to your condition that may have the most up to date treatments and/ or support groups?

Or are there any specialists or clinics nationally that can be sought out?

What about any research trials that may be trying to address your condition?

I hope you find some relief soon.

have you tried taking amitriptyline/nortriptylien, 50mg at night?

they canbe especialy good when combined with an NSAID (naproxen 500mg twice a day)

Re: occipital neuralgia--has anyone been cured??

thanx for the kind words. i live in philly and go to the jefferson headache center. no luck so far but i am on cymbalta and it is helping. I surf the net constantly for information on the topic but that only makes me sadder because the prognosis is very bad.

Re: occipital neuralgia--has anyone been cured??

Hi Angel

its nice to talk to somebody who knows how i feel. i had 2 nerve blocks and the first one helped me for about 2 weeks. I had another one shortly thereafter and it only worked for about 3 days so I gave up on them. But they may work for you and i hope they do.

I am now taking cymbalta which has helped, it knocks it down a bit but Im still very upset about the whole thing and the meds side effects are rough.

Keep in touch and let me know how you make out and if you ever find a doctor who helps.

take care
Chris

Re: occipital neuralgia--has anyone been cured??

I do have ON dude, and it isnt fun.

Nortriptyline could be added to your cymbalta for added releif (it is considered the gold standard of antidepressants for headache)

A NSAID such as naproxen (either as prescription 500mg tabs, one twice a day, or as the OTC 220mg ones, two twice a day) can give a lot of releif as well.

Re: occipital neuralgia--has anyone been cured??

Hi Biya:

Well, to make a long story short, the pain is in the back of my head where the occipital nerves are located. The pain is constant and shoot from the back of my head to the very front of the top of my head. sometimes it burns, sometimes its dull and aching and sometimes its a sharp pain. aspirin or over the counter drugs do nothing to stop it at all. The only time it goes away is when i go to sleep.

feel free to contact me anytime--I know how horrible this is and how hard it is to deal with. I have had it for a year now and i really hope you DONT have it.

take care
