Diagnosed, but don't believe it

I'm a 32 year-old female. In just over a one year period I've had four attacks. The first one in March 2010 was the most painful. A jolt of pain startled me when I was just sitting in a work meeting. I felt it in my back upper right cheek area and it felt like a lightening bolt. The pain only lasted a second and then numbness gravitated along the top of my cheek all the way to stopping near my nose. That cheek area then felt thick and numb the way it feels when novocaine is wearing off.

The same thing happened again in October and I went to see a neurologist who diagnosed me with TN. I had an MRI with contrast and nothing was found.

Since then I've had only two more attacks where I felt a much smaller jolt of pain (never as painful as what I felt in March '10). Doesn't TN normally get worse instead of better?

I often feel a thickness, or slight numbness most days but never with a sharp jolt of pain. The area feels slightly numb sometimes after I brush my teeth or just randomly. My dentist looked in the area and took x-rays but found nothing. Considering I don't have the jolt of pain frequently and I have only a slight numbness, is this really TN? What else could it be? Thanks!!

Re: Diagnosed, but don't believe it

You don't list a state so will just simply recommend you check with the facial pain association for an approved neurologist near you.
