Question Confused

My temp. spike yesterday to 99.2. I thought good, I'm ovulating...That's Great! Well this morning my temp. had dropped to 98.6. Then this evening my temp. was 97.2.
I've read every where that when your temp. spikes, you are ovulating.
But does it only last ONE day?? That doesn't give me very good odd's if that's the case.
Can any of you give me in imput on this?

Re: Confused

Yes, ovulation is only one day, but sperm can live for up to a few days (some studies say 5-7, but generally at least 2), so it increases your odds. They say that having sex every other day before, during and after you expect to ovulate is your best bet, since sex every day can decrease the sperm count. I never knew that your temp. elevates when you are ovulating. Interesting. Good luck and let us know how things turn out!

Re: Confused

When I finally did become PG we were not really trying because we were going to start IVF and we had been through alot of infertility treatments already. So on a Saturday morning before going to work I said to DH I think I am ovulating which was day 22 of my cycle so we DTD and I found out I was pg 2 1/2 weeks later, but anyway the point of my post is that I know it was on a saturday and according to my doctors and U/S I concieved on the Wed and we did not DTD again until after that, so according to them the sperm lived in there for 5 days before getting to the egg. So I think you may still have a chance.

Good luck I hope you get your BFP soon

Thanks for the good wishes! Anything to help the process. Thing is, I'm not trying yet, b/c I still have to finish out 2 weeks on the b/c patch. I just put my second one on, next Sunday I put my last one on, then the following Sunday is my 'week off' and I usually start my period the Wed. after that.
Dr.'s have also said that it's easier to get pregnate right after you have gotten off of some sort of birth control. Have any of you ever heard that??
I figured it would take some time getting out of my system. But apparently, I'm wrong.

Re: Confused

Temperatures can't indicate that you've ovulated for certain until about 3 days AFTER ovulation (when you have had high temps for 3 consecutive days). Yes, ovulation only takes place on one day, but after you release that egg, your temps stay high because the corpus luteum (it used to be the follicle that held the egg) begins producing progesterone. Progesterone is what makes your temps higher. The corpus luteum produces progesterone for about 12-14 days, which is long enough to sustain the uterine lining until either 1) a fertilized egg implants and lets your body know not to shed the lining or 2) nothing happens and it's time for a regular period.

The surest way to make yourself crazy (this might be empirically proven) is to study EACH and EVERY temp like it has meaning. STOP DOING THAT!! You will lose your mind that way. It's important to remember you are looking for a big picture pattern: low temps before o, higher temps after o. your temps migh fluctuate several tenths of a degree from day to day but it's only (say it with me) THE BIG PICTURE that matters.

Also, if you're on birth control, you probably won't see any of these patterns in your temperatures, because the birth control will be supressing the hormones that make your temperatures change. If you are on birth control you shouldn't ovulate. That's what birth control does!
