Arrow PCOS and high testosterone - trying to conceive

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 7 months now with no luck, and after some blood tests and a doctor visit, he told me I have a high level of testosterone (possibly PCOS) which is probably the culprit of the problem we have been having.

I ovulate every month, but at different times, and I get my period regularly every 28 days, although over the past few months the bleeding flow has been getting lighter and lighter.

The doctor said if I lose weight (I'm 75kg and 160cm tall) it will sort itself out, and my fertility will return to normal.

I hadn't really heard about this before, so I looked it up on google and there were all these websites saying that it causes permanent infertility.

Has anyone else managed to conceive while having PCOS or high testosterone levels, or lost weight and returned to normal? I'm really worried because I would love to have a baby, and it's really upsetting to think that I'll never be able to.

My doctor also said that I have a high level of something else in my blood, which can be caused by a benign (spelling??) brain tumor, which presses on something in my brain and releases too many of this certain hormone, but he said that some months women can jut get a freak high reading for some reason and it's about half the time it's nothing, so I'm getting the test done again next month to make sure. Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks guys! I'm just feeling a bit freaked out at the moment, and want to know exacty what my chances are of getting pregnant if I have either or both of these problems.

Re: PCOS and high testosterone - trying to conceive

Chickadee - I too was just diagnosed with PCOS in Jan. which was a major road block in the TTC race. Due to my diagnosis, I have been placed on Metformin (to control my insulin levels), Decradron (to reduce the amount of testostrone), Provera (to enduce AF), and Clomid (fertility med.). I won't lie, these past few months have been difficult, however the doctor is confident that this course of treatment will get us prego in the next few months. PCOS can cause infertility however today there are many medications and treatments that will help you to get that bundle of joy (At least I keep telling myself that). And on a side note, my mother had the same thing and she was blessed with two children (after taking Clomid). So, in a nutshell I am living proof that PCOS does not destroy the chances of having a family.

Granted I am not an expert on PCOS (for it is still all very new to me), however we are all here to listen. Keep us posted!

Re: PCOS and high testosterone - trying to conceive

Hi, I wanted to let you know that after ttc for about 6 months I was diagnosed with PCOS, I was placed on metformin which didn't really help me conceive, however about 6 months later, my dr. put me on clomid and I conceived in my second month and I am now 13 weeks pregnant. It can happen, keep reading (as I don't think all doctors are knowledgeable about pcos), and learn everything you can, I'll send baby dust your way...

Re: PCOS and high testosterone - trying to conceive

Hello - new to this board!

My wife and I have been TTC for about a year, with no luck. She was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday, and is a little freaked out. Her OB/GYN mentioned the treatments with Metformin (to reduce insulin resistance) and clomid. We really want children and are hopeful that using one or more of these drugs (in addition to her losing a little weight and exercising more) will help. We are a little paranoid about using the clomid, as I understand that it increases the risk of multiple births? I have looked around for stats, but they have eluded me. Are the risks of triplets, etc. very significant with the use of clomid? Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks.
