i saw a post you replied to saying that high prolactin levels can make it hard for you to get pregnant... why is this? im a bit concerned because i was taking medication last year that contained prolactin (it was an anti depressant) and it was around this time that tests showed i wasnt ovulating. i thought this could be caused by the meds but my doctor always insisted it wasnt
Prolactin is the hormone that is quite high when a woman is breastfeeding. In some ways it is considered nature's birth control. Rarely, when a woman is solely breastfeeding, can she get pregnant.
I actually found out that I have slightly high prolactin levels and my Dr is deciding whether this could the the partial cause of me not getting pregnant. They aren't so high that I don't ovulate, but perhaps just high enough that I don't O strong enough! I think it could definitely be one of the factors for you.
Normal prolactin levels in blood are 25 and under. You might see about requesting a blood test (fasting will give you a more accurate number). If your current ob/gyn won't do this for you, you might consider visiting another.

fallen_angel I know your post was for Goldenmom but I wanted to share with you what I know about prolactin levels as well because I had high prolactin levels for a year and been on a medication to lower it well they took me off the meds July 22 and my levels are now normal and for the first time in a year I O'ed this month. Prolactin levels was the primary reason I wasn't Ovulating now I have to have my levels checked every other month to make sure they stay where they are suppose to.
On the reason it makes it hard for you to get pg. My dr told me that your prolactin levels sends a signal that you are pg and being your body thinks your are pg then you don't O. I hope this helped some.

Oh also low prolactin levels will keep you from O'ing as well.

tami-you helped too, thats really interesting, the thing is i knew underneath instinctively that my meds could of been causing the problem. im now off the mes that contained the prolactin and straight afterwards my periods became more regular and i think im now O'ing (had cramps halfway through this month) so will have to wait and see! it annoyed me that my doctor kept telling me the meds wouldnt interfere!

just out of curiosity, which med were you on? I don't mean to be nosey, but i've been on anti-depressants a long time, the dr said not to go off of them until i get preg (for my mental health, obviously ) and then he said i could decide if it was worth any risks involved...but for mine they don't have enough research to confirm or deny anyway. There are a few that are considered safe, so that's my plan, is to switch when the time comes. sorry for babbling!!!
