It doesn't sound silly - this whole TTC thing is very confusing so much of the time!! And I learn new stuff all the time on here.....
Anyway, you are counting the wrong way...O is not determined by counting up from cycle-day 1, but backwards from the next cycle-day 1 (this is all quite general but give you a rough idea). It takes (for the majority of women) 14 days between O and AF therefore, if you have a 21 day cycle it is likely you could have ovulated on CD7, a 25 day cycle would mean O on CD11 etc. It is a common assumption that you ovulate on day 14 because most text on this subject presumes a 28 day cycle.
