IUI - Totally Confused.

Here I am again. 27 Male, Married.

Been trying for one year now. She checked her egg size and the blasting effect. Size and its release is normal. My semen analysis shows 55% active and other things like morphology, forward progression are fine. But, the post coital test is not coming nice. He tested it for the second time this month and he is not finding any alive sperms in her even after 28 hours of sex. They are assume to be there for at least 3 days. Now, the thing is that he is asking us to consider IUI. I am confused about it. I haven't taken advice of any other doctor yet. But, the doctor I am going to is experienced and does the stuff regularly. He explained me that may be its me. Like, 55% of the active cells may not be enough or strong enough to move up and reach the egg. They are 80million per ML and a total of 3 ml. Now, this by any yard stick is normal. Is he doing something wrong. How do they check if the mucous is acidic. May be the acidic nature of my wife is causing them to die. Can this be the reason. If so, wouldn't there be a cure for it.

I am totally confused. Help.

Re: IUI - Totally Confused.

I am not sure if the doctor can test to see if the cervical mucus is causing a problem for the sperm. When performing a postcoital test they look for live sperm, not hostile cervical mucus. Many US doctors will not perform postcoital tests because they highly doubt the validity of the test. In addition, the intercourse and postcoital test must during the woman's most fertile time, and the test should be performed within 12 hours of the intercourse.

An IUI is a good option because the doctor will insert the washed sperm (only the really good ones) into the uterus, making the potentially hostile cervical fluid no longer an issue. At that point, the sperm has to swim up and fertilize the egg.

Re: IUI - Totally Confused.

If you are comfortable doing an IUI and this doctor will perform it, I think you can use this doctor.

If you want a second opinion, definitely go to a different doctor.

Re: IUI - Totally Confused.

Well, We have finally decided to go for IUI. Our problem seems to be only solveable by this solution. I don't really believe in the overall percentages of success and all but they say its a success rate of 1 out of 4. I am way too concerned about the ability of my sperm to fertilize naturally. The doc says that the chances are 30-35% because we are young yet. 27 and 29. But, He may want us to be optimistic. The procedure is way too embarassing for me.

Would dearly like to know the comments of a few people who have gone through this procedure.
