clomid, ovulation and bbt

Hi All,

I've been on clomid for three cycles and have only gotten a positive OPK with one cycle. I wasn't bbt that cycle. I have since started to again. I have not gotten a positive opk in the last two clomid cycles (I've only gotten a very faint line on the opks. If I understand correctly, the lines both have to be dark to have detected a surge, am I correct? ) I have also not had a temp. spike to indicate I did in fact ovulate.

My obgyn said the bbt isn't a for sure science (I'm in the understanding it's just how it works. Also, when I take Prog to start my period, I notice on my charts my bbt is in fact higher), and also said a faint line means the test detected an lh surge. I thought pregnancy tests were the only ones where a faint line meant positive. My Dh and I were talking about this earlier and he's convinced the dr's right about the bbt and opk.

My dilema right now is this: if I dont' ovulate on clomid, I can't do IUI with this dr. I've only got one more month to try before my next appointment. The dr also said she can't give me a higher dose of clomid, as she just upped my dose to 150mg.

My question for you ladies is this: Have ANY of you gotten a positive opk, or have for sure ovulated and not gotten the temp spike from bbt?

I'd really love your feedback on this. Our next step is an re and I simply don't know how we'll afford the cost. How do you all afford the medical expenses ??

Thanks and baby dust to all!!!

Vi,

ps. I also posted this on the infertility thread.

Re: clomid, ovulation and bbt

Im on clomid and I would think that the only way to tell for sure if you have ovulated is with the progesteron Blood tests? I did one on day 21 that said NO O and then I snuck one in on day 35 and it came back as O (48) So i had a late ovulation and sure enough day 41 rolled around and for the first time in 7 months AF came by it self (no provera needed).

They have doubled my clomid dose to 100mgs for this round currently CD6 and they hope this will shorten my cycle. Maybe ask for the blood tests at 10 day intervals or something?

Re: clomid, ovulation and bbt

In my opinion, your doctor is giving you incorrect information. I have never read any information that indicated that bbt doesn't reflect O. I'm sure there may be a rare instance, but it is a biological princple of how the body works. Have you read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"? If you haven't I suggest you do. There is also a tear out section in there that you can give your dr so that she can educate herself on this process. BBT is not something that most OB/GYNs are taught and I have heard stories of many doctors who had know clue what it was or the principal behind it. You should chart your cm as well as your bbt.

Also, you need to read the instructions on your individual OPK, but for most tests the line must be darker than the control to consider it a positive. Like hpts, opks are not 100% reliable and they do not work for everyone. I never got a positive even though ovulation was confirmed by charting.

I hope that you are able to find the answers you are looking for. I would read the book, and ask around. If I were you and knew what I know after research, I would consider switching drs. Again, this is just my honest opinion.

Good luck!

Belle

Re: clomid, ovulation and bbt

My RE would tell you to throw out that stick , they suck! Are you seeing an OB or an RE?

I would have to say that it is poor of the dr. to have you continue to have only sex after the first round of clomid since clomid has been known to make thicker mucus. (shame on that dr.)

Your cycles should have been checked by blood work and ultrasounds. Find another dr. that will do this.

WHy cant you do IUI with this dr.? Why did you have to go to this one , why couldnt you go to one that could do IUI? Just curious dear.

Do you have any clue when you ovulate?

Re: clomid, ovulation and bbt

You need to see an Reproductive Endocronologist for your PCOS. I can only assume that you do not want the ins company to find out. Do they cover infertiliity? If not then what do they cover? Always find out WHAT they cover. They love to say what they dont but always find out what they do. If you are in NJ there are laws to help a little depending. Has the dr. said that he/she wants to go to injectables?

I seriously think you need an RE.
