Not producing an egg...

Please help...I am beside myself.
I have been on depo for 7 years...yes maybe the biggest mistake but I have a history of unbearable cramping, nausea, bloating, breast swelling and the depo really agreed w/ my body....Bliss for those years.
Early last year I developed a cyst and had high leveles of Eostrogen in my blood and my Gyno prescribed the pill to get the cyst to reduce in size and he assumed my body had decided to come off the depo. I got married and have been on the pill for 7mths. I stopped taking the pill in Nov as my hubby and I now want a beautiful bub.
Yesterday I went for a pregnancy test as I've had an unusual cycle since Nov and he did an ultra sound revealing no ovarian activity.
I will get the blood/hormone level results today but I am so sick w/worry.
Please someone tell me my dream is not utterly shattered.

Re: Not producing an egg...

What ?!

This does not make ANY sense at all. Please try to relax as you were badly informed. An ultrasound cannot diagnose "no ovarian activity", it is only a snapshot of your ovaries at one point in time. Ovarian activity can be diagnosed with blood tests. A female cycle begins at the start of your period and during this first part of the cycle you are producing more estrogen leading to ovulation. After you ovulate you will begin producing more progesterone in order to prepare your uterus for conception. You may be able to chart your cycle by looking at your cervical mucus. It is usually a bit thicker just before, during and just after ovulation (exactly like a raw egg white).

If you have just gone off the birth control pill then if may take a while before your cycle returns to normal. You can help your body by maintaining a proper body weight, exercising regularly (a 30 minute walk everyday does wonders) and eating properly (protein, fruits and veggies .. cut down on the carbs if possible). Reducing stress will also help a lot. If for any reason you are not ovulating properly, it will probably take a little time after the hormones for your body to go back to normal.

If you had NO ovarian activity you would have a variety of other symptoms such as terrible hot flashes, night sweats, lots of fatigue, brain fog, heart palpitations etc.. In other words, menopausal symptoms. If you do not have these symptoms it is because your ovaries are producing the necessary hormones and if they are then they are definitely active.

Speak to your doctor and try not to stress too much as cortisol is another hormone that is not good to have too much of over the long term.

All the best to you. Come back and tell us how things are going.

Re: Not producing an egg...

Oh and by the way, ovarian "cysts" are proof that your ovaries are working.

Ovarian follicles or "cysts" grow on your ovaries each month and contain eggs. At ovulation, the follicle breaks open to release an egg into your uterus and if fertilized, this will provide that beautiful baby that you are waiting for. Your doctor should have explained this to you. And to say that your body "decided to go off the depo" makes absolutely no sense .. not to mention that they now know that the birth control pill does nothing to hasten the disappearance of ovarian cysts (they have studies to prove this). Functional ovarian cysts come and go as a normal part of a woman's cycle, they are not abnormal. However, some cysts (like probably the one I have) are abnormal and not a part of the functioning of the ovaries.

Just so you know, there are two types of functional cysts .. the follicle which contains the egg and the corpus luteum which is the shell that is left over after the egg is released. Unfortunately, this shell sometimes closes up and fills with liquid creating a cyst (a follicle is usually called this because it is 2 cms or less and a cyst is called a cyst because it is bigger than 2 cms). Corpus Luteal cysts and follicular cysts go away by themselves in 1-3 menstrual cycles.

I hope this information helps you. Take care of yourself.
