Does anyone know if taking testosterone affect sperm counts?

Hi,

My DH and I are working with a surrogate. We just had our 4th cycle. So, I decided to have my DH's sperm rechecked. Two years ago he had above average sperm. We just checked it twice and it was ZERO counts! Zero sperm! I was shocked! The only thing that has changed is he started taking testosterone cream presrcibed by his doctor about 6 months or so ago...
SOmeone told me this would affect his counts... and this is the reason for zero sperm counts. I can't find any info on this. DOes anyone have info about this? How long would it take to get out of the body..

Thanks
Carolann

Re: Does anyone know if taking testosterone affect sperm counts?

Why did your DH start using the cream?

On the research I've done it does lower the sperm count. He needs to tell the doctor what is going on an get off the stuff. You said he had average sperm why did he start using that stuff?

He needs to try taking Maca long with other Vitamins to help get his count back up to normal. Make sure he drinks plenty of water, eat fresh fruits and takes a really good Men's Multivitamins. I've got my DH on a Men's Multivitamins long with taking Maca an other vitamins to help with his count.

This is what my DH takes to his up his count. I will tell you his count at first was only 3million an now it up to 10million. Hope that we get a BFP here in a few days if not be going to another IUI. Then we will have another SA done to see how count is. Praying it up more to improve our chances more.

This is what I got my DH taking
Maca 2x a day
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) 1x time a day
Zinc 2x a day
Vitamin C-1000 with Rose Hips 2x a day
Co-Enzyme Q-10 30 Mg Capsules 1x a day
Multivitamin for men 2x a day

Lots of people may think I not telling truth but test results don't lie. His count years ago was over 120 million now it is down to these. So we are doing anything to make it come back up.

Vitamins, minerals, water, and amino acids (proteins) all play very important roles in semen production. While that's an oversimplified list, these are the main ingredients that your semen is produced from.
zinc: increases sperm cell production - can be found in lamb, oysters, fish
vitamins C, E: improves production and motility (swimming action) of your sperm cells
Coenzyme Q10 - Take 10 mg daily. Increases sperm count and motility. Helps with DNA damage too.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) - Known as a male tonic (an agent that improves general health) and used to increase testosterone levels and sperm count.
L-carnitine - Take 3-4 grams daily. Required for normal sperm function.
Eat a natural foods diet that focuses on fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, poultry, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
Drink 50% of body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., a 150 lb man would drink 75 oz of water).

GoodLuck. Hope this gives you all some help.

Re: Does anyone know if taking testosterone affect sperm counts?

Thanks for the info... Well, my DH is 38 and has a very low libido. We had his testosterone level checked a year ago. It was normal, but on the low side of normal. So the MD put him on Bio-identical testosterone cream. I guess his main focus was to get his libido up, which it did, but didn't put 2 and 2 together that we were working with a surrogate. Geez...all this money and time wasted..I'm sooo frustrated.
MY DH's sperm was 350million two years ago! Above average....BIG SIGH...
I wonder how long it will take to get his sperm back up???

Yes it is very possible! But if his sperm are normal, don't go on Testosterone Replacement Therapy to treat the other effects of low T until done TTC. High T has more of an affect on sperm, but really low T can also hinder things.

TRT can kill sperm if the T levels get too high. It also shrinks the gonads and it can make the sperm slower.

cperryfranz- have him stop taking it now! It can take about 2 months to get it out of his system at least with the shots. With the gel it might be a lot quicker.

An alternate therapy is HCG shots, which we are doing now. It stimulates your own body to produce the testosterone naturally and is the safest thing for fertility. The important thing is to find out what is causing the low Test. Sometimes it could be a pituitary tumor, so it's important to get a full blood workup to determine the cause. If the levels are 300+ it's not considered low and no treatment should be done. If it's 200-, seriously consider HCG, which are shots that need to be taken 3x/week. It's hard to get the dosage right, but you need to start with a small dose and work your way up. Usually ideal levels are 700-800 for T.

Another note when doing TRT/HCG, the symptoms of low T and high T can be very similar, so it's important to get blood work frequently to see how it's doing as well as the PSA test.

One more note: Body builders who are taking super high T, use HCG when they cycle off it to jump start their natural T production. So what your DH may need is a relatively high dose of HCG for a couple weeks to get things going again. Try to find an endocrinologist/infertility specialist that has some experience with HCG for men.
