Newbie - have a question! :)

Hi there! My husband and I are trying to conceive... I'm 31 and this would be my first. I'm obese so I guess I would be a high risk pregnancy but we've been trying for 3-4 months now and not much luck.

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to figure out when I'm ovulating? I've never done this before and have always just relied on when I get it I get it.... Mostly my whole adult life I was on birth control, so I didn't really have to worry about it.

My periods are kinda irregular... I can go for like 10-12 days sometimes and I bleed A LOT! I dunno if that has anything to do with counting days for ovulation or not.

When I was younger I could go from getting my period early IE: within 3 weeks of the last one or 4-5 weeks after the last period. Since I stopped taking NuvaRing back around March or April of this year, they seem to be coming on almost the same schedule as if I was on the birth control still.

Any help is appreciated!

Re: Newbie - have a question! :)

I do want to suggest reading the book Taking Charge Of Your Fertility. Great book and easy to read. It will help you understand your cycles better and help you figure out when you might be ovulating.

Re: Newbie - have a question! :)

Sounds as though bc has regulated your cycle from prebc. This is good. Now to figure out ovulation, the book blastoff suggested is a must read. I'll try explain a bit but still you should read that book.

There are a few ways to track ovulation

cervical mucus: when you are fertile, this should turn literally to something that resembles egg whites. Even wet mucus is fertile but your best days to bd are with egg white cervical mucus. Some women think they don't have any but in reality it might just not come out as much. But it is there. Once you've ovulated it will quickly become dry again then may turn to creamy but should not be egg white again. Tip: sounds icky but if it stretches between your fingers it's egg whites. If it doesn't strethch, it's not.

Ovulation predictor kits (opk): very similar to an hpt. You pee on a stick about 12 days after af starts every day between 12-5 and wait for both lines to be equally as darkas the other. 12-36 hours later you wil ovulate. It's recommended to bd everyday after a positive for at least 3 days. 3rd day is to cover possible delay.

Charting basal body temperature (bbt): evey morning take your temp and record it. It's more ideal to take it every morning at the same time or very close to around the same time. You're looking for a pattern. Pre o, your temps should be lower. Post o yourtemps will rise. It should be fairly obvious.

All 3 methods combined you'll pinpoint o almost perfectly. Now, I've been told bbt charting is more of a nuissance then anything by 2 docs now, including a specialist. The argument being it causes too much stress. I stopped charting after 15 months ttc lol.

I recommend charting for a few months to understand your cycle. Once you know roughly when you ovulate, charting has little purpose. I understand continuing but I am tryig very hard to take a less hands approach.

Good luck.

The book I mentioned goes into better detail for the tips given. It also shows you charts you can look at.
Be careful with the OPKs they don't work for everyone. I'm one of those who they don't work for. I O but OPKs for some reason don't pick up on that. Charting was the best for me.
