Someone told me that you only ovulate on the 14th day of your cycle and that is the ONLY day you can get pregnant. Is that true. Is it the same for everyone?
That is only an average and that is only partially true for those that have 28 day cycles.
Ovulation varies from woman to woman and even from cycle to cycle.
For me when I was ttc for my second child I had 28 day cycles but I rarely ovulated on day 14. Then one of my doctors told me that most with a 28 day cycle actually have a window normally day 12 through 20 in which they should ovulate. Through charting I found that mine did vary every cycle by a day or more. Like one cycle it was day 13 and then the next it would be like day 16.
Those with shorter or longer cycles will have a window also. Normally it occurs halfway through the cycle. Some say you can pinpoint to happen two weeks after your period has started or two weeks before your period is due to start. Which can still be iffy because of irregular cycles.
Actually if you have long cycles, you will ovulate approx 14 days prior to menses. Not right in the middle. For example, I have about 45 day cycles. Ovulation usually occurs 14 days before the onset of menses. But yeah, if you have normal 28 day cycles it usually happens around day 14, which is in the middle. But like Whitewolf said, it can vary by a few days. And if you mean can you get pregnant only if you have sex on the day you ovulate, the answer is a strong no! Sperm can live a long time inside a woman. But it is the day that you actually conceive, for up to 24 hours, the life of the egg.
I guess that is what I was asking. They told me that there is only 24 hours in a month that you can get pregnant, and they said the only way you can get pregnant is if you have sex on your 14th day. lol. I didn't know any different I was asking you guys cause you all seem to know a lot about it. Thanks for responding though girls. I appreciate it.
Apparently sperm can live for up to 7 days inside the woman, and I've heard from this board only, that there are sperm that can live up to 10 days!! I really don't know if that's true, but the point is if you have sex anytime during your cycle, there is a chance you can get pregnant.
That's interesting, I never knew they could live that long!! Do you know what the average life span is? I thought I heard it was something like 48 hours?
It will vary depending on many factors. Though the average is three days inside the female body but like it has been said they can live up to seven days.
