need help in interpreting BBT

Hi Ladies,

Finally decided to register in a forum, hope to get some answers.

I've been having PCOS for at least 4 years now and all throughout its been the frustrating cycle of no periods and weight gain. In July this year (july 27th to be exact) i found out i was pregnant. It was a very welcome surprise, though my husband and I weren't trying, especially since i hadnt had a period the month of April. But then i miscarried a week later and was devastated.

Since then, my mind has been fixated on the thought of having a baby, and though the doctor has advised me to lose weight before i try again, i cant seem to stop thinking about it. After the miscarriage, i havent had a period again, but i wanted to somehow find out if im even ovulating in the first place. So i decided the try the BBt charting method.

My husband and I didnt use protection this Saturday, i was hoping that i might just turn out pregnant again. And since i dont have a first day of period i just started monitoring my BBT from Monday. Is this the right way to go about it? Im seeing my temp to be steadily rising in the past three days, but i dont even know if ive ovulated. My temps for the last 3 days (including today) are below:

97.10
97.16
97.24

Would appreciate any ideas as to how to go about reading and monitoring my BBT

EDIT: Todays temp was 97.20

Re: need help in interpreting BBT

It is hard to say since you don't know when your last period was. With the temps you listed, there doesn't appear to be a drop yet. Although, you could be past ovulation and those temps are during the luteal phase. Honestly, the cervical fluid was a much better indication of ovulation than my temps.

Re: need help in interpreting BBT

Thanks for the reply Kelly.. After the last temp of 97.20 on Thursday, I recorded the temps for Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well and they have confused me further. I have written them below. Could these erratic temps be a sign of anovulation? Im totally confused and am not sure who to ask about the records im seeing.

Friday - 96.81 (decrease of .39 from Thursdays temp)
Saturday - 97.29 (increase again)
Sunday (today) - 96.72 (decreased again!)

Ive ben taking these temps orally at exactly the same time every morning. What could this decrease-increase-decrease mean?

Cervical fluid is confusing me as well coz i see the clear raw-egg like fluid at least 2-3 times a month and i couldn't be ovulating that many times right?

Re: need help in interpreting BBT

It really is hard to tell with so few temps. It could be a hormonal thing or anovulation. You really need several month of temping and periods to better understand what is going on.

I often have trouble interpreting cervical mucus as well, but when ovulation occurs, I normally get way more mucus than I do on the other days. Also, when you think you might be ovulating, it doesn't hurt to try an ovulation stick to see if it is really happening.

Also, what kind of doc have you been seeing? I was just seeing my OBGYN and recently switched to a fertility specialist. I must say, the fetility specialist is so much better. With your long cycles and weight, you may want to have an ultrasound done and some blood work to rule out PCOS. I just had an ultrasound by my fertility specialist last week and I showed some cysts on my ovaries. My regular OB didn't even consider this.

Good luck.

Re: need help in interpreting BBT

Thanks again for the reply Kelly its really helpful to me that someone's replying and helping me find answers.

Ive been having PCOS for the past 4 years, and when i was pregnant the first time they saw cyst(s) in my left ovary, so i know for sure that i still have PCOS. My temps went all the down to 96.69 and then suddenyl increased to 97.35 the next day. Today it is 97.20. I know there should be variation in temps but is it this drastic usually? Ill try the ovulating stick and see what happens.

I have an appointment with my ob/gyn on the 11th, im planning to take my temps to show her and hopefully find some answers. Ive also been having a sharp but somewhat dull nagging pain in left pelvic area for the past 2-3 days. Making sitting, getting up, walking difficult. Honestly worried.

Re: need help in interpreting BBT

That pain could be your cysts. I get them as well. Are you on any meds? I jsut started some to help with ovulation.

Again, I can't stress enough how you really need to see a fertility specialist. OB's specialize in delivering babies and not fertility.

And yes, temps can be all over the place with PCOS.

Re: need help in interpreting BBT

Yes i am on metformin, since July this year. But i dont notice much of a difference. I declined clomid after my miscarriage because i didnt want to "force" my body into ovulating. But since i haven't had my periods again after the miscarriage my doc might put me on them now.

Will need to check out fertility specialists in my area, dunno any around here.
