How do they do this procedure? Are you awake when it is done? Is it very painful?

You are completely awake and unmedicated. Mine were done in the doctor's office. You are just up on the examining table, open and vulnerable to the world. Your exterior is lubricated with something along the lines of KY jelly. The most uncomfortable part of it was that they splash the urethra with VERY cold water right before they insert the scope (I'm female, so I don't know whether that would be different for a male.). The longer of mine lasted maybe 10 minutes. During neither procedure did I experience any discomfort whatsoever.

The one after effect is that for about two days there can be an acute stinging sensation when you urinate.

Do they use this procedure to diagnose IC?

I don't know for sure, but would think it might since it is looking at the interior of the bladder.

Hi, the cystoscopy is done when you're awake if they use the flexible scope, but if they use the rigid one you're put to sleep because it would hurt too much. I had that done on the 11th. To diagnose IC they do the cystoscopy with the hydrodistension.
