Unhappy Open Surgery..help!!

Hello, I will be having an open surgery in 2 weeks to fix a UPJ Obstruction that I have. I am very scared and wanted to get any personal advise on this surgery...anyone who has had it or know anyone close that has and can tell me all about it..how long was the surgery...painful?? painful afterwards?? anything about the stent..and so on... I want to know all about any pain and how long of recovery time you may have had. Thanks a lot in advance =)

What kind of open surgery? Are we talking percutaneous nephrostomy or percutaneous nephrolithotripsy?

I had a percutaneous nephrolithotomy in October of last year to remove a partial staghorn stone. The procedure itself went well and I was presented with my stone in lots of 'little bits' in a test tube - why..?..who knows.

I was left with a small scar (about 1.5 inches) and I had a week off work following the surgery, but had to be careful for a further 6 weeks because I had a stent - no jumping about, that sort of thing. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about these but mine was actually pretty painless (I think if you're male it's a more difficult thing to deal with). Initially I had quite a lot of discomfort when urinating but that seemed to subside to a manageable level after about 7-10 days. I also had a dull ache for a long while afterwards and my stomach is still numb in places.

In December I was signed off by the doc with a note to return in 12 months for another IVP just to check nothing has re-formed.

Not sure what else I can offer in terms of advice and I don't know of many others on this board to have had open surgery, so welcome to the club!

Thanks a bunch for the reply...it makes me feel better to know not everyone has had real big problems with the stent. I guess I will have to wait and see. I'll come back and let ya know how I'm getting along with mine. =) Serena
