Blood in urine but no other symptoms? - Urology Message Board

Hi everyone,
I am very worried about my sister. On Saturday she noticed blood in her urine.
She went to the doctor yesterday and they did confirm that there was blood and also saw white blood cells in her urine. They submitted the results to the lab but we wont get them back until Thursday.
Int the meantime, what is worrying her is that she has no other symptoms of a UTI - no burning, frequent urination, etc.

What could this be? Do some people have UTI or other infections without any other symptoms?

Any advice or words of comfort will be appreciated - we are really worried.

Your sister had, what we call "macroscopic hematuria"...in other words, blood in the urine that was visible with the naked eye. Usually when something like this happens it means that there is something going on in the lower urinary tract...i.e. the ureters, bladder or urethra. The most common reason for this is infection, a stone, or a stone which is causing an infection. The doctor has to do tests to rule out the more ominous things, and this includes bladder cancer. I don't know how old your sister is, but if she's on the younger side (i.e. 40 and under) it's most likely a stone or an infection...if she's a smoker, though, and is older than, say 50, then they would do a more detailed workup for bladder cancer.

I thought the only way they could detect bladder cancer is with a biopsy?

Hey Anne-
I was recently diagnosed with hematuria about a month or so ago. I noticed that my urine had turned a very dark pink/tea color for about a day before i mentioned it to my mom. I had gotten a tetanus shot the day before so i thought it was maybe a reaction. I felt no pain at all, no frequency, just like your sister. i finally went to the emergency room (luckily i was the only one there) and they ran urine and blood tests. the doctor didn't know what was the cause, so he just called it hematuria and a bladder infection and gave me a 5 day supply of antibiotics. i drank lots of water (which i do anyway) to help flush it out. i just wanted to let you know so you don't feel alone.

For the last year, I have had blood in my urine (tea colored urine) off an on and been to a urologist, kidney doctor, had 2 ultrasounds, an IVP and a catscan and they cannot find anything wrong. My urologist tells me that there are just some people who have blood in their urine and there is nothing wrong with them. I am having trouble getting life insurance though! WHEW!
