urine protein and ketones

can you tell me what it means to have both protein and ketones show up in a random urine sample? Is it anything to worry about? The nurse doing the test did not seem too worried. I think it was only a small amount. Also not doing any diets that would affect this result. Thanks

Re: urine protein and ketones

The Atkins diet - or any kind of a high-protein diet - would cause this. Your body will produce excess ketones that will be excreted in your urine and also your breath. Which is why people on these kinds of diets have bad breath that they're not aware of. It's not harmful for a short period of time, but you would not want to stay on a diet like this for an extended length of time.
