Pre-sling questions - Urology Message Board

I first started thinking of a bladder suspension over a decade ago. Now I'm really considering a sling procedure. The urologist thinks I will need that AND to continue on meds afterwards.

I've tried Detrol twice, it does nothing. Tried Vesicare earlier this year, but quit due to double vision. The doc just gave me samples of Enablex to try, we'll see how my sight does with it.

The doc hasn't indicated what type of sling procedure she's looking at, but perusing these boards I'm seeing mention of TVT, Burch, and S...(sorry, but the brain just blipped). Is one preferable?

My problem is mixed incontinence. I have both issues with stress, which is to the point that I have problems just walking on the stairs (that's what's getting me to the point of considering surgery), and urge.

She said if I do the surgery I can't drive for 2 weeks, can't lift over 5 pounds for 6 weeks, and she would prefer if I don't work for 6 weeks (aargh). I had one really lousy surgery experience, and want to feel the end result with this stands a good chance of improving things, or I might blow it off. Thoughts?

Just heard that my surgery is scheduled for Dec. 6. I asked the nurse, and she said the doctor usually uses the BioArc SP sling. Anybody with knowledge/feedback on this particular version?

I was just wondering if you have to have cystometrics done first at a Urologist before you decide on the sling surgery? I do, and am having this on Nov. 1. My Gyne wanted me to make a decision right away about the sling surgery because my bladder dropped, but I was so stunned that I didn't give an answer yet. Anyway he said that it all depends on the results of this cystometric study. He also mentioned a hysterectomy at the same time, but I don't see why this is necessary.

I've already done the tests, both the urodynamics and the cystoscopy. The latter was done under general anesthesia at the hospital (outpatient). The procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes, but I guess the pain is such an issue for some that the surgeon just puts everyone under.

I have my annual pap scheduled for MOnday and am supposed to talk with the gyn about whether anything needs done with the female organs. I doubt it. I mentioned to the urologist that I was told years ago that my uterus was tipped, and asked if that would effect the bladder, but she said that wouldn't matter.

So, barring anything unforseen following Monday's exam, there is no reason for a hysterectomy. I'd just as soon keep the equipment if there's no need to remove it, even though I'm postmenopause.

If you don't mind me asking, how was the urodynamics testing? I kinda have an idea about my bladder being filled, but would like to talk to someone who has gone through this. Thanks!
