pain from catheter - Urology Message Board

hi,

my dad has had a catheter in place for about a month, he has a constant stinging pain at the entry site, he has tried pain killers and they do not help, i have told the nurses about this and they just shrug, this pain is strong enough to prevent him from sleeping, he did have a test for infection and they did not get back to us, did phone anyway and was told must be clear or they would have got in touch, i cannot find any info on this and really hoping someone can give me any advice, anything pleeeeeeeeaaase

It sounds like the opening of the penis is inflamed, you can try applying a little water soluble gel (like k-y) to the opening to keep the tissues moist.
Don't use a petroleum base product ( like vaseline) it will break down the latex in the catheter.
The catheter should be changed entirely every month, make sure they use alot of lubricant when reinserting. Your father should be drinking alot of water too.

You might also have him sip a cup of chamomile tea daily, it has antiinflammatory and antispasmodic effects that might help . It won't have the diuretic effects of regular tea either.

When they tested did they do a urine sample test and a swab of his penis???

A swab of his penis needs to be done incase there is any yeast infections going on there, in most cases the infection is a yeast one and not bacteria

Also if he is having it changed on a regualr basis he could have a water infection or a uretha infection.

It has been proven that cranberry juice helps to prevent urine infections and it is also very good at helping to get a urine infection under control.

Does he have a normal catheter or a supra pubic one?? The supra pubic one goes in through the abdomen into the bladder, a normal ones goes into the bladder through the penis????
