Self-cathing, just had success!

After trying 3 times since yesterday, I FINALLY had a successful self-cath tonight! I have read, researched, and saw diagrams of the procedure and thought I was ready. Since home care hasn't called me yet, I figured I had waited long enough and figured I could do it myself. Well, I was totally frustrated until tonight when I was successful!! I was elated to say the least!

I bought a box of caths and lubricant and it's 100% covered by our policy. I just hope I can do this without looking after awhile. I know it will take some getting used to, but at least I'm empty again!

Any insight from previous posters is greatly welcomed. Support is always good

Re: Self-cathing, just had success!

skewch,

Great to hear you were able to self cath. Yes, there is a "nac" to it, but you will pick it up quickly. I too had a hard time intionally until I tried different positions on the toilet. It was later that I found out my urethra was at a 90% angle. So everytime I would "try" to cath I would cause injury to my urethra. I ended up at the ER the first night and leaving with a foley. So the fact you did get it the first night is fantastic.
This may sound rediculous but I intionally had to sit backwards on the toilet (probably because of the angle) it changed the angle of the urethra enough so I could get it in no problem and it made it easier to see also. So then I worked on a position sitting forward to get the right angle for me once I got the nac for it. Before long you won't even have to look to do it, you will just "know" where it is.
Great to hear your insurance is covering the catheters. I get mine from a company that sends a months supply to me every month which makes it convienet. Intionally they also sent me the kits with lubricant also until I told them I didn't use lubricant so they stopped sending that. They deal with the insurance company for payment so I don't have to do anything.
It won't be long now that you have done it to become second nature to you. You DID GOOD!
Wish you the best! Take care,
and God bless.
Annette
