Cystoscopy...in office or surgical center ?

Hi I was told by my urogynocologist that I have blood in my urine and recommended I should have an ultra sound of renal/bladder followed by a CYSTO.... They said I can have it in office or surgical center.

Wondering what to expect and if I should consider the surgical center. I was originally planning to just have it done in office but am now reconsidering. If anyone can share their experiences I would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Cystoscopy...in office or surgical center ?

I had a "cysto" done about six months ago via general anesthesia. You couldn't pay me to have it done via a local. Perhaps due to the fact I am a male makes a difference, but I have heard horror stories regarding the pain that is involved with the procedure from both genders.

Mine went fine, and everything turned up normal. I had some painful urination that lasted about 12 hours. For that period of time it felt like I was urinating razor blades. As long as you have a strong heart and don't get sick from the anesthesia, that is the way I would go.

Best of luck, and I hope everything turns out well for you!

Re: Cystoscopy...in office or surgical center ?

I have had this done many times and all of mine were done with just a numbing gell injected up my penis. It was uncomfortable but I would not say it hurt. When my doc was doing it he moved the monitor so I could watch it was neat the first couple of times, when mine was being done it was part of stent insertion so I got to see all the way to the kidney.
Mine was done in a hosptial as a out patient, and if you can avoid being put under it would be better for you. It really is not that bad but peeing after does sting alot but goes away in a day.

Re: Cystoscopy...in office or surgical center ?

Hi shmal, I've had it done several times in the office and last summer it was done in the hospital, because my urologist needed to dialate me as well. I preferred the office. There was so much less of a hassle. I was somewhat numbed, and there wasn't much pain. I did have that burning feeling afterwards for a little while. It certainly beat the general anethesia from last summer,(I still had that burning even then.)Best of luck in your decision, Wallaj

Re: Cystoscopy...in office or surgical center ?

Thanks so much for your input everyone.. I'll tell ya decision making is never easy is it? The funny thing is I have had multiple surgeries upward of 30( not for this), all but one have been w/general anesthesia I HATE the feeling of going under and even w/Zofran I am sick as a dog afterward. So anytime I can avoid it I do. But I am just slightly concerned about the discomfort associated w/this. Cause even the straight cath in the office sent me wriggling.
Also I did have surgery on my urethra a few years ago so not sure if that would complicate things or not.
But again thanks for taking the time to give me some food for thought.I appreciate it!

Best of luck Shmal! Please let us know how you make out, and I hope the results of the cysto turn up negative.

Re: Cystoscopy...in office or surgical center ?

Hi All. So I had the cysto done today in the office, They were very nice and I was pre-medicated w/Valium & Percocet ( 2 of each in total). Anyway all-in-all it was not that bad. They did however find & biopsy a polyp in my bladder. The results should be back in about week.
Also the ultra sound I had showed a few cysts in my R kidney. So what happens now,IDK. I am scheduled for a Urodynamic (sp?) work up in two weeks. Then address the cystocyele which I originally went to the doctors for to begin with.
