My 14 year old Grandson lives here with Grandma and Grandpa and I'm worried sick. He's never been sick and about 3 weeks ago started into diarrhea which seemed to be going around. Took him to the Doctor and Doctor ordered stool sample and abdominal ultra sound. Doctor called back today and said the ultra sound showed a swelling of the urethra just at the kidney connection and said it could be an obstruction below or re-flux. The bowels show nothing and culture clear??? Any connection between the two and should I be really worried about cancer?? are the obstructions normally benign or cancerous ??? Grandmas freaking out here. Jill
Sorry Jill, I am not able to help you, I hope someone will be able to show some light on it. Would you ring your dr. again and ask him obstruction, is it a stone, is something growing there, what is his opinion on it. Has he referred you to see someone about it? or will it go away its self. how is your grandson feeling now.
Thanks Garda for your kind reply. I did call the Doctor back and talked with him and he said the swelling is very small and he said it's not the way cancer presents it's self BUT there's always a possibility. When he first called my heart was beating so fast I couldn't hardly hear him talking. This morning the office called with an appt. for Feb. 14th for an urologist, which is quick here in Ontario Canada. So as much as I'm grateful I'm worried now it's something that is more serious ugghhh I can read something into everything. I'll be back and let you know how it goes. Thanks again
Best of Luck Jill, do please let me know. I understand what you mean, we give out when we have to wait months, when we get seen quickly we worry.
Try not to worry, easier said than done I know.
Thanks Garda, It's a whole family here of bad bladders kidneys etc. just got my hubby out of the hospital at 5:30 this morning. He was really sick with what we thought was the flu. Finally he said, gee does it every burn when I pee and my back is killing me. The light bulb went on. Done lots of tests and he is full of infection, they put him on an IV drip and a pill. I have one bladder infection after the other unless I am constantly drinking water, and now the Grandson. Uggghhhh life isn't for sissies.
There is mild fullness of the left renal pelvis of uncertain clinical significance and etiology. I am uncertain whether this is on the basic of an extra renal pelvis, left urinary tract obstruction or left sided UV reflux.
Hi Jill, Just saw your post, haven't a clue sorry, I am new to this, but not new to pain!.
My over active bladder started this time last year and was fine till the summer, and I keep getting bouts of it, which are now getting nearer each time, I cant understand how one minute I tell you I am great today. An hour late I could be in and out every 10min, no infection!!. Can you run it by your dr.? or will you have to wait to see a consultant?
Let me know how it goes. I am having ultrasound of renal and bladder tomorrow so will see what that brings.

I understand the frustration as I have also had a bout of burning and constant urination without showing a bladder infection. I have also shown blood in urine then know blood, had A typical cells and then know A typical cells. It was a good 2 years of urine tests, bladder scopes, ultra sounds etc. There is a new seating system for voiding out it's called squatty potty (sp) a type of stool that puts the body in the position to void the way our ancestors did in the old days. I've just found that I have to drink and drink in order to hold off the burn or infection. I ordered the test strips from e-bay and I can check my own urine and know what's going on. Sometimes blood know infection, it's varied. But the specialist can find nothing that is going to kill me so I'm happy for the moment. I used the test strips on my Grandson as well, and it shows nothing which makes me feel somewhat better, he goes for his appt. on the 14th. Don;t know if your menopausal or not but I believe it has alot to do with all these problems.
The fullness in the pelvis could be an "extra" pelvis, a congenital anomaly that usually causes no problems or symptoms, an obstruction in the ureter would normally be either a stone or a stricture, like scar tissue from a previous stone passing or infection, and the reflux means there is some degree of backward flow of urine in the ureter, increasing the size and or pressure in the renal pelvis. The reflux can predispose to kidney infection and so can the obstruction, but I would bet this is an incidental finding. He should at least have a urine specimen checked for infection and blood, often present with stones, but that would normally cause severe flank pain. I think cancer is highly unlikely, so I would just follow up to see if anything else needs done to check this out further.
Thank you so much Lady Bug I really appreciate your posting. I've been through alot myself lately and I'm a little raw and this info helps put it into perspective and calm my mind. They did find this totally by chance and there really isn't any symptoms at all, as a matter a fact is was diarrhea that was the concern and it has rectified itself with some good ol' probiotics. I hope you know by taking the time to reply that you have made another persons life that much better. Thanks again
