Flu shots already?

Last week I read in the newspaper that they are starting to give flu shots in my area of central Florida. Isn't it a little early to get a flu shot? Some doctors recommend getting a shot as soon as it's available. I think it's a supply and demand situation. In other words, if the supply is there, they want people to use it. However, in my area, they usually offer flu shots multiple times in different locations, so I don't feel rushed.

I plan to wait until sometime in october. Then I know it will be effective throughout the flu season, even though they claim it will last a long long time.

"Jumping the gun" means: you'll get shot early.

Re: Flu shots already?

The US CDC information on the 2010-2011 flu vaccine, including a listing of the three flu strains included:

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/flu_vaccine_updates.htm

Note that the two A strains are different from last year. One of the A strains included is the one that caused a lot of concern last year.

Re: Flu shots already?

Thanks tjlhb,

As far as the timing goes, I don't have the option of getting a flu shot before October. I called my (HMO) doctor's office and was told that they won't be giving shots until October.

Re: Flu shots already?

If you are in a hurry, I've seen local Walgreens stores advertising flu shots. They typically charge around $25.
