Some supplements, like my supplement combo of L-arginine, L-ornithine, and L-lysine, have directions that say I should take it on an "empty stomach". Well, what is that, exactly? Am I supposed to wait until I'm flat out starving to death before I take them? Or am I supposed to wait a certain amount of time after eating?
Empty stomach for me is the morning as soon as I wake up. That's usually the best time to take your vitamins. I'll eat breakfast an hour later.
Oh, I should have been more specific. It says to take the supplement on an empty stomach, either at bedtime or an hour before exercise. All the other supplements I have (multivitamin, damiana, ginko biloba, evening primrose oil/cod liver oil) say to take with meals.
Oh. It's when you haven't eaten for 3 hours or so, and all the food is digested. You know, after a meal you feel the food inside of your stomach? Well, when you don't feel the food it's probably digested so empty. And also, after you woke up. Cause then you haven't eaten for long either, so that's allll digested.
The stomach empties within 30 minutes of the consumption of food. If something tells you take on an empty stomach it can be safee to take one hour after consuming anything with a nutritional or fiber value. Many supplements and amino acids can react with materials already in your digestive tract. This reaction could limiit the amount of the active principles that are acutally absorbed by your body in the small intestine.
