What is an Empty Stomach?

Some supplements, like my supplement combo of L-arginine, L-ornithine, and L-lysine, have directions that say I should take it on an "empty stomach". Well, what is that, exactly? Am I supposed to wait until I'm flat out starving to death before I take them? Or am I supposed to wait a certain amount of time after eating?

Re: What is an Empty Stomach?

Empty stomach for me is the morning as soon as I wake up. That's usually the best time to take your vitamins. I'll eat breakfast an hour later.

Oh, I should have been more specific. It says to take the supplement on an empty stomach, either at bedtime or an hour before exercise. All the other supplements I have (multivitamin, damiana, ginko biloba, evening primrose oil/cod liver oil) say to take with meals.

Re: What is an Empty Stomach?

Oh. It's when you haven't eaten for 3 hours or so, and all the food is digested. You know, after a meal you feel the food inside of your stomach? Well, when you don't feel the food it's probably digested so empty. And also, after you woke up. Cause then you haven't eaten for long either, so that's allll digested.

I think you should take them before bedtime then. Eat something light 2-3 hours before bed then take them.

Re: What is an Empty Stomach?

Empty stomach means 30 minutes before food or 2 hours after food. That is pretty much the basic rule.

Re: What is an Empty Stomach?

An "empty stomach" for supplement purposes is 1 hour before and/or 2 hours after eating.

But.....doesn't it take 1 hour for most pills to digest into the liver/bloodstream?
If you eat around 30 minutes, doesn't the food inhibit the vit. digestion?

This post is great! I have always wondered the same thing!

I have used the 1 hour before- 2 hours after rule, but I am starting to think
it isn't always true!

Re: What is an Empty Stomach?

All depends on the kind of meal you have eaten. The bigger the meal, the longer the digestion.

Re: What is an Empty Stomach?

The stomach empties within 30 minutes of the consumption of food. If something tells you take on an empty stomach it can be safee to take one hour after consuming anything with a nutritional or fiber value. Many supplements and amino acids can react with materials already in your digestive tract. This reaction could limiit the amount of the active principles that are acutally absorbed by your body in the small intestine.

I hope this helps.
