| Re: How much MSM is too much?
This is what I picked up from a reliable, unbiased source on supplements: "Typical dosage recommendations range from 2-5 grams per day as a beginning or "loading" dose to about 50-200mg per day for maintenance. Due to the lack of strong scientific efficacy, however, MSM is not recommended as a particularly effective dietary supplement for joint health."
The active 'ingredient' in MSM that promotes stronger, healthier bones, hair and skin (connective tissue) is sulfer, which is readily available from other, less costly sources (mainly food!). Despite all the annecedotal claims that it helps RA sufferes it has yet to be substantiated by the medical community. It does seem to help the body stimulate immune system response.
MSM is considered safe (but not effective) as a dietary supplement. Toxicity has only been reported in rats and dogs when taken at very high doses - doses that would correspond to 200 grams per day for a human.
FYI, other sources of sulfer are: eggs, meat and fish, and sulfur containing amino acids such as methionine and cystine/cysteine.
Cheers,
Nat
