Magnesium Citrate for calming effect do I need to take calcium with it?

I bought a bottle of powdered Magnesium citrate to take for the calming benefit. Do I need to take a calcium sup with it? Can I just take it by it self?

.... I just started taking magnesium oxide and they told me just to be safe take it with food... it maybe the same with what your taking... they say it needs something to bond with or it could go straight through your intestine... good luck .... it sure helps with my nerves... Dee

For magnesium Citrate you can take with food or by its self as the Citrates are highly absorbable and also take it without Calcium as it will compete with magnesium in the intestinal receptors.

Deeraysmom...you are correct about magnesium Oxide as it needs food to transport it across the intestines (villi)...

It is my understanding that calcium should be taken with magnesium. This helps prevent calcium kidney stones. Magnesium should be half the amount you take for calcium. Calcium can make you sleepy so best to take at night.

I've always taken my calcium with my magnesium. Thanks for the headsup. From now on I'll take my calcium by itself at night.

My two cents worth.

I have taken every form of magnesium there is on the market for years(20+) daily. I take it in high does every day. I almost never take calcium.

Calcium keeps me awake. I don't take it with food because i need acid at that time. I don't need carbonate then. At night it keeps me awake. Other times it seems I am eating. : )
