N'acetelcystene

If anyone here is taking this, what dosage works best?

I am taking capsules and all the companies that sell them seem to be the same - 600 mg. 1 capsule a day. Calrson's makes a powder and suggests 1 tsp., which is about 3500 grams!

If taking more capsules will help I will do so, but there are side effects listed from taking too high a dose.

Any input welcomed.

Re: N'acetelcystene

Hi Ballady...

I take NAC also, 600 mg's daily. I have read that it is a powerful antioxident and is good for people with resipitory disorders and helps to prevent pulmonary problems. I take it as I have an autoimmune disease, [Hashimoto's Thyroiditis], and there is a lung disease that runs in my family....so I take it as [hopefully] a precautionary supplement.

I don't know about taking high doses though, but I recently read that in the studies they did [for preventing lung diseases], that they gave their subject- participants 600 mgs daily and did see positive results. I'd be a little afraid to take such a high dose as you mentioned, as on the bottle it says to take it 1 x daily [600 mg]. Since they used only 600 mg's in this study, I think I will just stick with that. (I'm just curious...what side effects did you read about?? I think I did read that it could upset your stomach)

Also, one article I read said to take on an empty stomach, and on the bottle it says to take it 'preferably with a meal'. I usually eat a samll snack before taking it....how do you take yours, Ballady? Sure does stink though, doesn't it??

Good luck...
Deda

Re: N'acetelcystene

Hi Deda,

I also take it with meals, following the directions on the bottle. I read that it can cause nausea and upset stomach but I have not experienced either. I'm curious, though, about you saying it stinks. You mean the capsules? An after-effect? I don't smell anything.

I take it mainly for air hunger which has been, for me, a side-effect of Lyme Disease. But now I'm realizing this is probably due to a faulty immune system and/or perhaps low adrenals and has nothing to do with the condition of my lungs, so I'm not sure if I should continue to take it. Although I also have Hashimotos and was interested to hear you say this was beneficial for that.

Best

Re: N'acetelcystene

Hi Ballady...

I haven't experianced any nausea or upset stomach with either...thank goodness. You know, Ballady, I had the NAC confused with another herb that I take, (Valerian Root).... that's the one that stinks...and I don't take it anymore, as I read and heard too that you don't take that one if you have an AI disease. (I know there's something else that I'm taking now though that stinks...I take quite a few supplements, and it gets confusing)

So...has the NAC helped you with your air hunger? I hope it's working for you. You know, I was surprised [again] that you didn't get any replies on your post, as I [think] I had posted a question about NAC on this board before [back a while ago], and I too didn't receive any replies.... or it could've been another board, [but I think it was this one]. I don't think too many people take it....a lot of people have never heard of it. Anyway, you're the 1st one that I've talked to who does take it. I can't recall what you said in your 1st post, but I'm curious, how many mg's you are taking per day?

As far as it being good for Hashimoto's....I'm not really sure on that, but I think the more antioxidents we take, the better....but that goes for everybody, I suppose. (I try to get a lot of that from my diet too, and try to eat my 5-9 serving a day of fruits and veggies).

I think with the Hashi's, there are certain vitamins and supplements that we really benefit from...like Fish Oil, (I take the high quality Icelandic Fish Oil), B Complex, Vita C, extra B-12, Evening Primrose Oil, Calcium/magnesium, etc. I've really changed my diet too since I found out that I have the Hashi's...and changing other aspects of my lifestyle, (I'm still working on), sleep, exercise, stress reduction, etc. (Old habits are hard to break, but I'm not giving up!)

Do you happen to know of any other vitamins or supplements that are beneficial for those of us with AI disease, particulary Hashimoto's disease? (There are other one's I take, but can't remember them all as I sit here...I'd have to go look in my kitchen cabinet)

My best to you also...
Deda

Re: N'acetelcystene

Hi Deda,

I take a lot of vitamins and herbs for the Lyme Disease. Since I am hypo/hashi I also take Armour. It's the only thing that really helps to keep me status quo on thyroid issues. The synthetic meds make me ill.

As for the NAC, I take it as you do - per the directions on the bottle, a 600 mg. cap a day.

Ballady
