| Re: Pomegranate supplements?
Pomesgranates are a great source of antioxidants. But, before you start taking supplements you should understand what antioxidants are, and why they are so beneficial. Antioxidants are rated on a scale called ORAC (Oxygen radical absorbance capacity). This is found by introducing a fruit (pomegranate for example) to free radicals. Free radicals are damaging cells. They cause skin to look unhealth, cancerous cells to form, disease to sprout, and more. The antioxidants are able to fight off free radicals so that they cannot harm you. So that is why it is important to eat fruits and vegetables because they are full of antioxidants (and of course other nutrients). On the ORAC scale pomegranates fall anywhere between third and fifth best on the ORAC scale so they are way up there on the antioxidant scale! For 1 gram of pomegranate you can expect to have apx. 105 ORAC. In more practical terms, for 100grams (which is 3.53 ounces) of Pomegranate will have 10,500 ORAC. The top fruits (every chart is slightly different) are Wolfberry fruit which has 20,200 ORAC, Acai fruit has 18,400 ORAC, next in line is Pomegrante as mentioned above, 10,500 ORAC, next is Prune at 5,700 ORAC. So by getting your daily dose of Pomegranate you are doing a good thing for your body. I think it is always important to understand the supplements you are taking, and why you are taking them. Hope this helps a bit!
