Niacin Flush

I'm Investigating Niacin to start taking it for health reasons and I keep hearing about a "flush" that happens with it and that it could make my itch. Is there anyone that can describe this "Flushing", because I would like to know what I'm getting into. will it feel like I'm blushing or will it be noticable on dark skin or is the itching something I'll need some cortison for? I would like to be as prepared as possible and also would like to know what dosage i should start at. If my skin itches would it be bad to scratch or should I not scratch. I want to be fully prepared.

Re: Niacin Flush

You can buy "flush free" niacin and you can also take an asprin close to when you take the niacin to prevent flushing. My hubby is on niacin and he doesn't have any problems with it. My understanding is it is mostly a feeling of cheeks flushing if you get it at all.

Re: Niacin Flush

you will feel a wave of heat and you go red - not just your face, sometimes all over. it lasts about 20 minutes. drinking cold water/milk helps, or like the previous poster said, taking an aspirin. it shouldn't be too much of a problem but it depends on how much you're taking. the longer you're taking the more your body gets used to it and the less you will flush.

Re: Niacin Flush

Buy a bottle of 100mg capsules and take one every 1/2 hour until you flush. That way you shouldn't get too bad of a flush. If you want to get it over with and see what it is like, dissolve 100 mg in warm water and drink half of it on an empty stomach, if you don't flush in 5 minutes, drink the other half. Taking it dissolved in warm water on an empty stomach can make you flush in about 1 minute in my experience. Once you experience it you will see that it isn't anything to be worried about. Once your 1st flush is over, then you can build up to the dose you want.

My son takes 1000 mg capsules and I accidently took one once and I got a terrible flush, I even felt a bit dizzy and my stomach hurt, but it all went away after about an hour and I was fine. A light flush just makes your ears and top of head tingle with a little redness. A really strong flush will sting hard all the way down to your feet, and feel like your skin is hot, but it won't hurt you.

If you are planning to take quite a bit each day, like 2 grams or more, then the flush will either be mild once you get used to it or you won't have it at all. Just divide the dose into 2 or 3 doses a day. You can build up to a higher dose without ever having a really bad flush just make sure that once you flush you don't let your blood levels go down, keep taking it 2-3 times a day.

I don't think you will feel like scratching, just rubbing your skin.

Re: Niacin Flush

If you have never taken Niacin before and took 3000 mg of it and had a sever flush, which could be expected. Could this flush feelings remain in your body as in the warmth of the skin and what not last more than a couple days? My pharmacist says its possible but i see here it should be out in 30 minutes.

i took this much because i was trying for a natural aid with depression like symptoms. not for any other crazy reasons....

thanks
