Can taking lots of Vitamin C cause continual stomach pain?

I was taking large amounts of Vitamin C a day for a month and my stomach got extremely irritated so I stopped taking it cold turkey. Since that my stomach has been in a lot of discomfort and pain, and it's continually gotten worse. Any ideas?

What dosage were you taking of the Vit. C? I take 1,000mg a day...any more than that, and yes I do get stomach irritation as well as diarrhea from it.
