Re: how much iron should you consume a day

Depends whether you are anemic or simply have low-ish ferritin levels.

Most people who are anemic or have very low ferritin levels will take a more substantial level rather than one that is in a multivitamin, which you might want to take as a simple "pick me up".

It has taken me 3 years to get my ferretin from 8 up to 82, taking high daily iron supplements. I'm on Ferro Grad-C at the moment and it contains 105mg of elemental iron (325mg dried ferrous sulphate). My doctor has now added another lot of iron twice per day which contains 18mg as he wants it up to 125 and to stay there.

If you have concerns regarding your iron, you might want to post over on the Anemia board. I've had a lot of help there along the way and learnt a lot.

Re: how much iron should you consume a day

Depends on various things. Women of child bearing age generally need more iron than men or older women. Either low iron or too much iron can be harmful; if you believe that either may be the case, see your doctor to get your iron (serum ferritin) levels checked.
