How can I tell if my fish oil capsules go bad?

I have a bottle that is a month expired, but my mom said things like vitamins and supplements can be taken a month after the exp. date. Does fish oil really expire, and how do you tell? I only ask because aspirin for instance has an exp. date, but my former boss, daughter of a pharmacist said it never goes bad. Is it ok to take my capsules?

Re: How can I tell if my fish oil capsules go bad?

Unlike almost any other pill, fish oil capsules actually can spoil. I once threw up after swallowing some that had been out in daylight too long.

If the bottle has been stored in a cool dry place, and the capsules themselves are still firm and not squishy, it should be safe, though.

I have been told that the main problem may be that the product loses some of its original potency, if you keep it a good deal longer than the expiration date. I think within 6 months is probably fine and that the manufacturer is just covering themselves. I agree with previous poster, fish oil needs to be stored at room temp or cooler, but not in the fridge.

Re: How can I tell if my fish oil capsules go bad?

partlycloudy,

Fish oil will go bad (get rancid) after a certain period of time. I don't take fish oil but I recall that someone once said you can break one open and smell it. I wonder if anyone on this board has ever tried that and, if so, what would it smell like?

Why not in the fridge jenj770. That's where I keep mine.

Interesting you question this because I did as well ... just a few days ago. I asked those who produce my product. I was told my krill oil can be stored at room temp or in the fridge without harm, so the fridge is where I now store mine as well. I live in NYC where it can get very hot and humid in the Summer so I feel better about it being in a colder environment.
