I just read a report from an MD that 5000 IU is now becoming used more frequently. This is probably because so many people are very deficient in D. However, I would get the lab test first to see if, and how much, you are deficient.
I agree w/the previous poster in that D 3 is preferable. D2 is synthetic and can be toxic in large amounts. I take about 2000 IU a day. Of course this depends on where you live, but most people need more D in Winter.
