Hi, for two and a half weeks I took a large dose of chelated magnesium - 600mg a day. I started to feel dizzy and unwell and eventually figured out that it must be the magnesium (the symptoms started the same day as i started the supplement - I should have noticed it earlier derr!.) I stopped taking the magnesium 3 days ago and I am starting to feel better, but am still feeling weak and dizzy - still not my old self.
I don't think this is a severe overdose as I haven't had a really bad stomach, which I know is a sign of magnesium overdose.
How long will it take to clear the magnesium I have taken? and should i hurry it along by taking some calcium? Is there anything else I can do?
PS I already know how stupid it is to OD on minerals so you don't need to tell me! :-)
Many Thanks

hello ruben, i definately had one of your derr moments... (not sure if this will help you)
few weeks ago i went to the health food store, explained to the gentle men that i was experiencing restless leg symptoms...he told me i wasnt gettiing enough magnesium...
told me to start with 1-400 mg capsule for 4day...if it didnt help go to 2.
well i had to go to 2....
not putting it together until (actully yesterday)
for the past 3 weeks....ive been experiencing Diarrhea ...OMG...Ive been doing exactly what he told me to do..brown rice-apples-bananas-acv & water, & probiotics..with very little help...
THEN THAT LIGHTNING BOLT HIT...(lol)
magnesium...i was taking 2 capsules @ night =800 mg..(searching the internet that is a definate side effect...-you'd think the man would have told me thats a possibility)
as far as how long it will take..not sure...
but like you..it finally hit me...im eating right & all..what could be going on...
i dont feel sick...just Diarrhea ...
as of today...STOPPING MAGNESIUM.....(possible low dose later on)
tc ruben...hang in there & drink plenty of liquids....(im guessing thats the way to hmmm GO!)
a chelated magnesium, like magnesium glycinate chelated will not cause diarrhea in large amounts because it is buffered. You might also try a transdermal magnesium (it's absorbed through the skin so it bypasses the gut completely).
thanks jen,
the magnesium i was taking just says "magnesium" on the front & on the back "magnesium as magnesium oxide")
which, without a doubt will cause Diarrhea .....
there are many reports on magnesium...& definately too much-depending on individual system can cause Diarrhea ...so PLEASE be careful......
i learned my lesson..the hard way...
tc all
good health

Right, unless it is chelated (buffered) it could definitely cause diarrhea. You should be fine with a chelated brand.
Hmmm. I didn't think that 600mg is all THAT much magnesium. The "Real Vitamin and Mineral Book" gives an optimum amount as 500-750 mg. Is that wrong? I am prediabetic and take Magnesium for that reason, 575mg/day. Help!

I take more than that. The newest news is that most people need much more mag then they are getting - from food and/or supplements.
I have started taking 8-- mg of magnesium adn am feeling dizzy and upset stomach. I take it for heart palpitaions, which it does calm them. I will go back to my 1 dosage of 400 mg and see if the dizziness and upset stomach subside. Has anyone had an upset stomach from too much magnesium?

What kind are you taking? If it isn't chelated (buffered) it definitely could cause diarrhea or other stomach upsets. Are you taking 800 mg.? If so, you could try cuting it by half and see if you still have those symptoms.
It is very hard to get enough magnesium from the foods you eat. Supplements are not absorbed properly. The best way to get magnesium is by taking epsom salt baths. Magnesium is absorbed through the skin, like vitamin D. 2-4 cups of Epsom salt in a hot bath 3-4 times a week for 20 minutes will give you all the magnesium you need. There are other health benefits to Epsom salt baths as well. They draw toxins out of your system. Do a search for the benefits of epsom salt baths.
