B12 deficiency?

I'm a 33 year old male. Over the summer I started training quite hard - lots of running combined with dieting and went from 17st to just over 15st in 3 months. I had never felt better. Then I suddenly started developing symptoms which mean i'm now being tested for B12 deficiency.

If my symptoms - tingling hands, face, feet, sore tongue etc - are from B12 deficiency due to over-exercising and dieting, would taking a B12 supplement help quickly or would it take some time to take effect?

I started a supplement just over a week ago - still waiting on blood tests to confirm B12 deficiency is the actual cause - and had mild improvement i think, but wondering if i need injections to properly reverse this?

Thanks, G

Re: B12 deficiency?

If you actually are vitamin B12 deficient because your diet is vegan or near vegan, then oral supplements should be able to correct the vitamin B12 deficiency.

If you are vitamin B12 deficient but your diet is not vegan or near vegan, then you should be getting vitamin B12 from animal source foods (meat from any animal including mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates, eggs, and/or milk) in your diet. If you are B12 deficient under these conditions, than you may be lacking the intrinsic factor needed to absorb the vitamin B12, so you would then need to get it by injection.
