I find that vitamin D3 (Nature made / Spring Valley) give me bouts of insominia..... researching these boards, I see others have had the same reaction.
My question has anyone switched brand names of vitamin D3 and find they have a more positive reaction? I believe the more expensives brands use cod liver derivative rather than lanolin, but chemically isn't the end result the same? My blood test shows low vitamin D. But I may resort to more sun exposure the 7 months of years my latitude provides it.
Sun is the best solution (at least 20 minutes of noon day sun) if that does it for you. If you still need to supplement this is an excellent source: Bio-D Mulsion Forte by Biotics Research. It is liquid so very absorbable. Two drops = 4000 IU. Vitamin D should be taken in the AM with a fatty meal and Vitamin K. If you're taking it in the PM that might be contributing to your insomnia although I've never heard of this problem with vitamin D.
jenn-Does Whole Foods sell that brand? Or liquid in general is ok? I've been taking NAture Made for 1.5 months and will get re-tested. I might switch over to liquid. I also get very fragmented sleep, but I'm not sure whether it's the D supps or my thyroid meds.

Why is that we should take it during the AM?
No, WF doesn't sell it.
Regarding taking D in the AM, I'm actually not sure of the scientific type reasoning (maybe someone will chime in) except that there have been many anecdotal reports of people having difficulty sleeping when taking it at night. Some suggest taking it with the largest meal, but if that is usually dinner, and sleep is a problem, taking it in the AM may be best. I've never taken it at night so I don't have that comparison, but you could try both and see how it goes. The main thing is to take it with some fat and I do know that vitamin K also helps it to be absorbed properly.
I definitely think the quality of supplements could be a factor. Many supplements have fillers that could be a potential problem. Also, I would look for brands known for good quality control standards. I'd rather pay a few extra bucks, if needed, for what I'm putting into my system. The D I mentioned to you is actually inexpensive and an excellent product.
I heard from a holistic expert that it's best to get vit D from the sun, as you'll get the whole spectrum of D, but if taking supplements it's best to take vit D2 supplement, as D2 is very safe and the body will make D3 from it as needed.

Regarding supplementation, I differ with this information and I'm surprised it is from a holistic practitioner. D2 is synthetic and can be toxic in large amounts. I think if you do research you will find that D3 is most often the recommended and safe source.
It's best to get it from the sun, yes, but i am not getting any sun here!!! :P When i see sun, i scram outside to try to get some. i got maybe 10 days of sun and spent it outside reading my book, a while hour. How long does the D from direct absorption from the sun stay in the body? I know the extra time i am out there beyond the 15 min won't do much but it still feels good..
